County Board Opposes Permissive County Income Tax Plan

Huron County commissioners oppose a state proposed permissive income tax that would be enacted by counties and subject to public referendums. Police clash with youths in Ann Arbor unrest near U of M

Police and youth groups clashed along South University Street in Ann Arbor as 21 were arrested and several injured. The scene marked the third night of gatherings with violence rising between demonstrators and authorities while officers reported no injuries among police and 24 Tuesday arrestees faced rioting charges under a new state statute.

Senate Agriculture Committee Debates Boosted Food Stamp Plan

The committee chaired by Sen. Allen J. Ellender discussed expanding food stamp spending from $340 million to $750 million next year and $1.5 billion in 1971, while President Nixon proposed $661 million next year and $1.6 billion thereafter. Fourth of July plans in Norwalk face funding strain

Norwalk residents will still see fireworks on the fourth but funding remains tight. The Fourth of July committee reports only 10 dollars in donations while the VFW has raised 750 dollars for fireworks. The parade may be dropped next year if interest does not rise. The Lions Club and VFW plan chicken barbecues and games, funds supporting scholarships and sight conservation. Parade end point and safety concerns are unresolved as 90 units register.
