The body of 10 year old Mary K Mount, missing since May 27, was found by two teenage fishermen near a road called the highway to nowhere. Police tentatively identified the girl and an autopsy was scheduled.
Considerable cloudiness with a chance of showers and thundershowers today tonight and Thursday. Highs in the 70s with tonight in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Friday mainly cloudy and cooler with showers ending. Norwalk temperatures reach 78 and 57 with humidity around 64 percent morning, 43 percent afternoon, and 51 percent evening. Precipitation recorded at .01 inches. Sun up at 5 53 a m and sunset at 9 04 p m. Moonrise at 9 05 a m. Marriage license applications list Kenneth Munns and Jeanne Albright among others. Births include five new Willard area babies. Deaths noted for Mrs Clara Chaplik and William Henry.
NASA announced that six hours after the Apollo 11 moon landing Neil Armstrong will plant a nylon 3 by 5 foot flag on an eight foot pole in the Sea of Tranquility with a spring device to simulate motion. Edwin Aldrin will join him for a two hour and forty minute moon walk.
A blaze starting in a garage at 39 Newton Street caused $11,400 in damage Tuesday afternoon. Firemen fought the two and a half hour fire, likely sparked by a short circuit in basement wires. The house and garage, owned by Thomas Doughty Sr, sustained heavy interior and smoke damage. contents and wedding gifts were ruined. The younger Doughty serves in the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Virginia.
Technicians at Cape Kennedy start fueling the Apollo 11 command and service module as four weeks remain until the lunar mission. Astronauts Armstrong Collins Aldrin in excellent health after a full day review of flight preparations.
In New York City primaries, law and order candidates swept conservative voters. Marchi defeated Lindsay in the GOP race while Procaccino toppled Wagner in the Democratic contest. Mailer failed in a bid for the Democratic nomination.
The House Ways and Means Committee approved a $9.2 billion revenue bill extending Nixon’s income tax surcharge for 12 months, after removing a $3 billion business tax break. The measure moves to the full House, then Senate action looms. The surtax runs through June 30 but could be revived retroactively.
The Norwalk plant of Superior Coach Corp. suffered a wildcat walkout shortly after noon Tuesday. Workers remain off the job as union and company officials meet to resolve the dispute. United Auto Workers Local 1379 members had recently signed a three year contract and had ended a ten day strike. The conflict centers on an employee's sickness documentation and attendance.
Mrs. Jacquelyn Slanczka 18 of 155 East Main St. remains in critical condition in the Elyria Memorial Hospital ICU. Her husband Robert 22 and their baby daughter Stephanie 19 months old were killed Sunday in a head on collision near Oberlin. Funeral services for Slawczka and his daughter were held this morning at the Gerber Funeral Home Wakeman.
Rep E W Lampson pressed on with House Ways and Means Committee hearings on a county income tax for education despite criticism. Fifteen witnesses urged more education funding as Gov Rhodes backs a tax option, while Cleveland officials highlighted rising child counts and school costs amid stagnant property tax growth.
