Measure Corn Field Plant Stand in Ohio

Ohio State University agronomist Lawrence N Shephard urges farmers to check corn plant stands. He notes last year’s stands cut state yield potential by about 25 percent, with Ohio averages around 15 500 plants per acre, 5 000–8 000 below many hybrids' recommendations. Farmers should pick hybrids for desired traits and follow seed producer guidance. A quick test: measure a row length equal to 1/1000 of an acre, count stalks, multiply by 1000, and average across sections.
