New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller began demolition of a new Harlem state office building by swinging a 34 ton wrecking ball. He took quick lessons for photographers and played at the controls without incident.
The annual Buckeye Boys State program starts today at Ohio University in Athens. The week long event marks the 30th year with 1,360 teenage boys from across Ohio expected to attend. Buckeye Girls State begins next week at the same location.
A bipartisan coalition in the House defeats the administration’s $29 billion rise in the national debt limit. Republicans seek across the board spending cuts while Democrats split between curbing domestic costs and opposing a blank check for expanded Vietnam funding.
Detectives prepared charges against Edward Hoffee the Garfield Heights high school band director for auto theft and possession of about ten thousand dollars worth of stolen band and electrical equipment. He was shot Sunday in a golf pro shop near Canal Fulton after allegedly breaking in. He remains in fair condition at Massillon City Hospital with facial gunshot wounds and loss of sight in one eye. New London School District Superintendent W.R. Burton will resign to lead the proposed Marion Area Joint Vocational Technical School District. He cites the exceptional challenge and plans to return to his home community in the new role. Burton started in New London in 1962 after positions in Delaware and Franklin Counties and Columbus.
Norwalk High School 1967 graduates heard Kendall Somers warn that time cannot be recaptured and urged living fully developing talents. He spoke at the 107th commencement at the junior high, stressing effort over excuses and noting parental influence. Tim Columbus introduced him after displaying a portrait of retiring teacher Herbert Rolsten.
