Vandalism probe gains momentum at Western Reserve High

Huron County detectives believe three or more youths smashed 284 windows at Western Reserve High School early Sunday. A Jeep or pickup was seen fleeing the scene after 3:13 a.m. tire marks and cement residue indicate use of a cement block and tire iron. Principal Max Friend reports graduation proceeded despite outrage. a $500 reward funds tips. Repair costs run about $7,000 with replacement beginning. Suspect in December arson case awaits trial.

City considers 60 percent jump in sewer rates

The city plans a rate rise from 48 to 80 cents per 1000 gallons after 5000 gallons to cover a projected 25000 deficit in the sewer fund by year end. A $2.40 minimum applies to users under 5000 gallons each quarter while higher usage faces the new tier.

Fire at Certain Teed prompts 4000 dollar loss

A blaze at Certain Teed Products in Milan Township caused between 3000 and 5000 dollars in damage to open yard paper bales. Fifteen to sixteen firefighters battled the three hour fire assisted by plant staff and a Huron department crew. No injuries reported.

Gardner to Own New Cardinal Supermarket in Late June

Gardner, longtime manager of the A and P store here for four years and a 30 year employee, will take ownership when the new Gardner's Cardinal Supermarket reopens in late June. Cardinal Foods vice president Jim Organ announced the store will carry the Gardner's Cardinal name. Cardinal Foods subleases building and equipment from A and P as Gardner moves to ownership and opens his first own store.

Light turnout marked the off year primary as residents visited the county administration building to vote on the Ebove levy and the mayoral race. Polls remained open until 7 30 p m with short waits noted at the site.

Striker Files Sex Harassment Claim At Plant

One of the striking employees of Great Lakes Packers filed a sexual harassment complaint with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. The complainant’s name is withheld for privacy. The strike, mainly women, also seeks higher pay better facilities and voluntary overtime. A union dispute over agricultural worker status hangs over the talks at the Holiday Inn in Sandusky with owner Jerry Fritz.

Ghrist disputes ETA pay claim in impasse talks

Avery-Ehov e Joint Vocational School superintendent Creighton Ghrist says the total salary demand by teachers is about 14 percent, not 8. An impasse panel will be formed with Michael R. Fegen for the board and Ken Cole for ETA. Negotiations began April 23 with issues including salary, benefits, and two non monetary items.
