UPI reports two thirds of North Vietnam's electric power knocked out by U S bombing raids after April 20. Defense officials say more than half the power grid in Hanoi Haiphong region damaged by thermo plant strikes.
In New York a flower-pelting crowd of over two thousand hippies clashed with anti hippie youths in Tompkins Square Park. A young woman was stripped to her panties during the melee and later rescued by police as authorities pursued the mob.
Senator Peter Dominick reports General Westmoreland believes Vietnam requires six hundred thousand American troops by year end. The Colorado senator just returned from a trip to Vietnam and conveyed the assessment.
Former child star Shirley Temple Black indicated she could pursue the Republican nomination for California’s 11th district seat. Rep. J Arthur Younger 75 will not seek another term due to leukemia, creating the open race in San Mateo California.
Georgia Governor Lester Maddox issued a private memo restricting staff fashion. He ordered women’s skirts to knee length and men’s hair to ears, saying outfits must reflect the dignity of the office and not resemble street styles observed in Atlanta.
Clear skies bring seasonable temperatures through Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 70s and cooler readings near Lake Erie. Sunrise at 5 56 a m and sunset at 8 55 p m. Birth announcements list three new babies from New Haven Willard and Willard. Marriage license applications include couples from Sandusky Willard Bellevue Norwalk and Greenwich.
Patricia Rospert of Bellevue was awarded $30,000 in a civil suit verdict in Huron County Common Pleas Court. The suit, against Emma G. Hines of Lexington, stemmed from a 1965 automobile accident near Bellevue. The jury deliberated about an hour after a two and a half day trial before Judge Robert Henderson.
Monroeville High School senior Terry Robbins, partly paralyzed by spine cancer, faces a court-ordered permanent injection ban under a Cleveland federal district court ruling issued April 5. Attorneys for Rand saw 30 days to appeal, but no appeal has been filed and the case appears closed. The student body had petitioned President Johnson and federal officials for vaccine release. Prior Rand treatments had shown improvements before the FDA halted the vaccine. Senator Young's office said the issue is now in court hands.
An official from Senator Young's office said the request to modify a temporary injunction so vaccinated individuals could continue receiving vaccines was not granted. The permanent injunction has been issued, leaving no option to intervene. A letter explaining Young's position was sent to Monroeville's 67' senior class, alongside three other letters this week about Terry Robbins's case.
Six soldiers from the 77th Engineer Port Construction Company were killed when a 50 foot flagpole they were erecting on a Little League field toppled onto a high tension wire at Ft. Belvoir area in Springfield Virginia. Names listed include Charles P. Oliver Kenneth G. Steiner Marvin D. Harrison Paul D. Briggs Anthony Evans and Charles M. Whaley. Fire officials described a chaotic scene with clothing on fire and a swampy area delaying rescue as electricity remained live for over an hour before the bodies could be removed.
A 15 year old temporarily expelled from school admitted stealing a car after being called to the office for insubordination. The car, owned by Dwight L. Coder, was found abandoned near Gallup Ave after running out of gas. The youth was cited into juvenile court.
Two 24 year old men Lester A. Moore Sr. and Larry J. Moore were arrested by the Erie County Sheriff s Department and are being questioned by Norwalk police over a Norwalk downtown burglary surge. They faced Erie County charges for breaking and entering at Bogart s Corners Fleet Wing Service Station and appeared in Sandusky Municipal Court bound over to the Grand Jury.
Approximately 200 awards certificates and trophies were handed out at Norwalk High School for Recognition Day. The Alice and Sam Awards went to Melissa Scott and James Hammersmith. other honors included the Lions Club Personal Achievement Award to Elizabeth Johnson and Richard Hintz and the Rotary Club special award to Janice Sue Sweet for a physically disabled student.
Burglars pried open a locker and door at the Willard Golf Club to steal 400 dollars. Stan Ware discovered the loss this morning and reported the entry point on the north side. Sheriff deputies consider the incident possibly unrelated to recent Norwalk thefts and continue the investigation.
Norwalk police officers volunteered for overtime to curb a surge of downtown burglaries. Police Chief L C Hilson worked until 2 30 this morning and joined officers on the regular night shift to guard against further break-ins.
