Ships inch past sunken freighter in St Clair River

Traffic returns to near normal as vessels navigate around the 572 foot Sylvania stuck on a mud bank in the St Clair River after sinking in a narrow channel. The Sylvania was rammed by Canadian freighter Renvoyle and threatens to block the waterway linking the Great Lakes to Lake Erie.

Ohio 37th Division to be deactivated after summer camp

The Ohio based 37th National Guard infantry division will be deactivated after this summer's three week training camp. A brigade now attached to Pennsylvania's 28th Division will transfer to Indiana's 38th Division but stay in the selected reserve ready for quick mobilization.

Marines Repel Night Assault In North Vietnam

Saigon reports Marines killed 450 North Vietnamese troops during a night attack aided by heavy mortar and machinegun fire. Officials say 174 Marines were wounded or killed, including 54 dead, as helicopters ferried the force to a suspected North Vietnamese headquarters complex in the northern coastal plain.

Second Balloon Launch From Norwalk Airport Today

The second free balloon launch from Norwalk Airport occurred around 10:30 a.m. with pilots James Contos of Akron and Bob Nadich of Cleveland, members of the National Lighter Than Air. The craft headed west as crewmen feared a northern wind could shorten the flight. organizers plan several more launches this summer from Norwalk.

Dad Of 10 Dies In Gas Chamber in Colorado

Luis Jose Monge, 48, father of 10, died in Colorado State Penitentiary gas chamber after pleading guilty to the 1963 murder of his pregnant wife and three children. He was the 77th execution in Colorado and the first there since 1964, strapped into the chair at 8:02 p.m. Warden Wayne Patterson witnessed the execution.
