Fewer Pupils and More Staff Alarm Ohio Schools
State Auditor Thomas Ferguson reports an alarming trend in Ohio that school staff numbers rise while student enrollment falls. Over five years the employee to student ratio moved from one to 14 to one to 11.5, with total education costs rising to more than 825 million dollars. Inflation helps but cannot explain the staffing rise. The report highlights district variations, including Hicksville at 672 dollars per student and Beachwood at 2518 dollars per student with a high staff-to-student ratio of 5.74 and fourth-highest cost.
