Califano ousted as HEW chief in Carter shakeup

President Carter accepted the resignation of HEW Secretary Joseph Califano amid a broad administration purge. Avis tests HydroFuel hybrid in management cars

New York reports Avis Rent a Car will test a hydrofuel blend in about 30 Northeast management cars this summer. The fuel combines gasoline alcohol and water as an alternative energy source. The test aims to evaluate performance and viability of the HydroFuel concept.

Norwalk Man Pleads Innocent in Norwalk Fatal Shooting

Walter Dewiel 19 of Ashland pleaded not guilty in Huron County Common Pleas Court to a murder charge tied to the fatal shooting of Clifford Hartwig 23 of Norwalk. Hartwig died hours after a Sunday morning dispute at a party on Reed Street near Michael Henry residence. The weapon was recovered near Maxie Tire.

Indictments Sought Against Norwalk Men on Drugs and Gambling

A Warren County New Jersey prosecutor seeks grand jury indictments for Phillip H. Lorcher and Doug Emmons on drug possession and gambling charges. Police found over 350000 dollars in cash and marijuana and cocaine in their Blairstown traffic stop on I-80 on November 7. Emmons previously faced a Florida drug bust including over a ton of marijuana, cocaine, Quaaludes, weapons, and cash. he remains free on bond awaiting Florida trial.

Don Wise Named to Norwalk City Council

Don E Wise, 41 W Chestnut, chosen by the Huron County Republican Central Committee to fill the vacant Norwalk city council seat. He succeeds William Ream who left council and radiology chief post at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital to take a hospital job in Illinois. Wise had chaired Norwalk Planning and Zoning for six years and resigned last November for a Landmark Foods position. The at large seat expires year end. committee will appoint a candidate to run in November.
