Rep. Wilbur Mills says Treasury Secretary John B. Connally should resign to avoid becoming Nixon's scapegoat if the economy does not improve. Mills, a Democrat from Arkansas, tells reporters he would advise Connally to quit if asked.
Negotiators report near agreement on a new contract for 750000 postal workers while rail talks hit a snag. The contract would expire at 12 01 a.m. today but clocks were stopped at midnight Sunday amid a favorable tone. The four day railroad strike faces continued pressure.
Rioting in Oxnard California's Colonia suburb leads to firebombs destroying a pharmacy and damaging a bank branch and an elementary school. Nearly 150 rioters clash with police for about two hours. Police arrest 25 as officers restore order after skirmishes and hit-and-run attacks along a four-block stretch.
British Prime Minister Edward Heath welcomed President Nixon move toward mainland China as an important initiative to learn how to live with the Communist world. He told the American Bar Association London conference that Western and Communist worlds differ and Communist ambitions have not changed.

In Grand Blanc Michigan police combed a weekend search for a five pound cyanide canister found missing from pediatric surgeon Dr. Hardie Elliott. His wife moved the bag two blocks before realizing the lapse. Two local teenage sisters disposed of the item after picking it up thinking it was a bottle. Bruce MacArthur, father, heads the Beautification League and says the family learned of the hunt from the newspaper.
Mount's stance on a city manager system in Norwalk appears. charter chairman says a study of his questionnaire reply is planned at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in mayor's court. Mount resigned as Norwalk service director in 1970 after 15 months. In Saigon, Vietnam urged North Vietnam to discuss reunification and free elections under a cease-fire, reaffirming a two year old Paris peace plan.
Police rounded up 57 hippies in Ibiza amid Spain’s dragnet on drugs and sexual permissiveness. The detainees include Americans such as California resident Robert Berge. Arrestees face magistrate court hearings with possible charges of vagrancy and insult to the Armed Forces.
Vernon E. Craig of Wooster seeks to break the world record for lying on a bed of nails. He will begin at 9 am Thursday and aim to finish 60 hours later, with nails three inches apart. He fasts to avoid interruptions, notes past feats including 825 pounds supported on nails.
Dr. Joseph Geoghan, a Norwalk dentist, filed petitions to run for a full term on the Norwalk Board of Education. He was appointed on December 1 to fill the unexpired term of Dale Olsen who resigned for business reasons. He previously ran unsuccessfully in 1963 and is the first candidate named for this year’s race. Incumbent Paul Miller also faces a term expiry.
Cleveland Indians pitcher Sam McDowell was fined a near one thousand dollars for misconduct on the team bus after a Saturday night incident involving improper language. The bus traveled from Los Angeles Airport to Anaheim en route to a series with the California Angels. Manager Alvin Dark declined to comment.
