ITN indicates Illinois residents urged to limit driving burning and electrical use as ozone danger nears levels with six counties under a yellow alert. An ozone watch covered the rest of the state amid forecast hot muggy weather and little relief. DETROIT UPI reports automakers see strongest June sales in 11 months, up 8 percent from May but down 10 to 11 percent from last June, keeping first-half results weak. Washington UPI notes President Ford praised the White House pool funded by private donors including Henry Ford II and Mrs. Lyndon B Johnson. Betty and Susan Ford commented on his enthusiasm.

Norwalk plans one of its largest Fourth of July parades with over 180 units lining Wooster and East Main Streets starting 10 a.m. The shorter 2.7 mile route includes a Grand Marshal, Del Donahoo, and a full day of events at the fairgrounds with Jaycees and Lions Club activities, rodeo, sky jumps, tug of war, and a fireworks finale.
Seven varsity coaches warned they would resign if Van Ramsay became athletic director of Norwalk City Schools. After a secret board meeting, the board chose John Neighbor instead, with coaches labeling Ramsay’s tenure unacceptable and one coach Robert Hart signaling he may leave the system. Hart will return to football coaching this fall.
