Remedial reading teacher Edward Van Norman uses a converted yellow school bus as a mobile classroom for Norwalk elementary students. The bus serves five schools with six students per stop for 45 minutes daily, housing a 500-volume library and phonics workbooks.
The School Board debated and delayed payments on architect Thurman Peabody and contractors Roth Brothers Shepp Plumbing and Heating and Diamond S Electric during a tense meeting. Peabody left the room as the panel approved withholding 152.89 from his fee and paying Roth Brothers 5000 of 6066 while settling Shepp and Diamond S balances.
Norwalk superintendent Dr. Sturgis Corbin asked the board to authorize him to apply for $23,000 in Title I federal aid to lease two temporary library buildings near League Street and Pleasant Street Schools. The plan, supported by George Selden of CIT Educational Buildings, proposes 24 by 48 foot structures with a three year lease at $8,404 per year, or $26,000 to $27,000 to buy. Board members urged preapproval of projects and to review proposals before submission, and the board voted to have the superintendent and board act as a unit to pursue Title I funding for a beneficial project.
