49ers fire Thomas amid upheaval as Walsh linked to job
San Francisco owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. dismissed general manager Joe Thomas and head coach Fred O Connor with the team mired in a 2-14 season. Stanford coach Bill Walsh was expected to be named new head coach, with Walsh possibly choosing the GM. The move follows prior trades and personnel shifts that critics say hurt the 49ers.
