In Madisonville Ohio police say 42 year old Charles Gibson died of a right temple gunshot after his wife said he pressed an empty pistol to his head during an argument. The shooting was ruled accidental.
Sirhan B. Sirhan 24, an Arab immigrant, goes to trial in Los Angeles for the Kennedy assassination. Courts seal off the venue as jurors and alternates are selected for a potentially three month proceeding with a defense focused on diminished capacity.
Senate confirms Richard Russell as President Pro Tempore, placing him fourth in presidential succession behind the vice president and the speaker. He succeeds Carl Hayden who retired at age 91 after long service.
Cloudy and windy today with cold highs in the upper teens to low 20s and brief snow flurries. Tonight clears with diminishing winds and lows 5 to 12. Wednesday brings increasing clouds and a light snow chance, highs 30s, then Thursday turns mostly cloudy and colder with additional flurries. In Columbus the 108th General Assembly opened with Senate and House moves to lower Ohio's voting age to 19 from 21. Senators Collins Guyer Turner and Reps Scherer Cruze filed the bills, with minor openings and expected cross party support. A separate measure would let cities levy up to 2 percent income tax without a special election.
Beryl Slocum of New York and Newport and Adam Clayton Powell III are weighing marriage though no decision is made. Powell, 22, a radio news reporter, has not commented. Social debutante Slocum, 26, descends from prominent New York families and Mayflower-era ancestors, with opposed prospects from her parents.
Berlin Heights village officials were invited to Chicago to negotiate a settlement of a $4,000 bill linked to a failed village water system project. They expect to meet in late January or February, noting Chicago is not convenient.
In Farmington West Virginia widows allege misallocation of more than 200000 dollars raised after the Mannington mine disaster. They say food and toys were distributed unevenly while funds are not reaching the 121 orphaned children or the widows despite donations and a trust plan. Each widow reportedly received a separate ten hundred dollar gift from a union locals.
Snow caused nine accidents investigated by the Norwalk Post with eight minor weather blamed incidents on the Castalia patrol. A 12:35 p.m. Route 20 crash near Wakeman injured driver Thomas Baldosser 23 of Republic and started a fire in his trailer, later released from hospital after treatment.
