Senator Eugene J. McCarthy will enter the March 12 New Hampshire presidential primary challenging President Johnson. David C. Hoeh, chair of the New Hampshire McCarthy-for-President Committee, said he received McCarthy’s telegram confirming entry. He has already announced candidacies in Massachusetts Wisconsin Nebraska Oregon and California.
Governor Nelson Rockefeller warned New York to curb spending as he opened the 1968 state legislature. The speech signaled potential White House ambitions despite his denial.
The University of Cincinnati Board of Directors voted to confer an honorary degree on famed trumpeter and jazz musician Al Hirt. Hirt, UC Conservatory alumnus, had been nominated earlier but illness prevented him from accepting.
Columbus Ohio The Ohio Turnpike reported 1967 revenues of 33 million and a sixth straight year of income increases. Commission Chairman James W Shacknessy said the system was substantially safer and the safety record the best in several years, notably better than 1966.

Three civil suits seek a total of 95000 in damages from G Thomas More of 514 N Sandusky St Bellevue. Plaintiffs Walde W Jacobs and son Keith 4-year-old, Anna L Jacobs, and Mrs Golden Jacobs claim injuries from a December 31 1965 collision on East Main near Wood in Bellevue involving a car driven by Golden D Jacobs.
Mayor Harold Finch says total construction fell 25 percent in 1967 with new homes driving the rise in residential activity. New homes valued at 865 600 versus 355 725 in 1966. about 40 permits issued in 1967. Industrial and commercial totals declined, with 334 666 for new industrial work and 171 760 in repairs.
Philip Blaiberg, in good condition with a strong heart, spoke his first words after Tuesday’s transplant by Dr. Christian Barnard’s team at Groote Schuur Hospital. Blaiberg, white, received the heart of Clive Haupt, 24, who died of a stroke.
Charles Conner, 18, of Mansfield, was sentenced to 10 to 25 years after pleading guilty to armed robbery in Huron County Common Pleas Court. He admitted stealing $20.04 from a Plymoth woman on Dec 21 and faced related charges involving $116 from Harvey's Market and $90 from Mrs. Neda Harvey. other charges were dropped.
A driver swerved to avoid a five year old boy on Marshall Street causing a two pole collision. Fran cis Joy Martin, 35, was treated and released after injuries. A second incident on North Wooster Street involved improper backing by Mrs. Leonard Mundy, damaging two vehicles. Police identified occupants and owners.
Health officials warned that school reopening after holidays may boost Asian flu spread. The NCDC reported 12 states with outbreaks, three probable, 12 possible, while absenteeism data lagged due to holidays. Experts cautioned a spike as kids resume in-person classes.
Norwalk High School officials say attendance returned to normal after a holiday break with earlier absences blamed on strep throat and flu. St Pauls High and city schools were near normal. NCDC notes several states report Asian flu outbreaks with varying probabl e and possible cases across the region.
Jay E. Thomas of New London has picked up declaration of candidacy petitions for Huron County recorder. A Republican, he will seek a second term after being appointed to succeed the late Lee Hudson in 1963 and winning election in 1964.
