Second Heart Transplant Successful At Groote Schuur

Cape Town doctors led by Dr Christian Barnard completed a five hour operation giving retired dentist Philip Blaiberg the heart of a 24 year old man of mixed race in the second heart transplant. The donor heart is said to be functioning well.

New Year's Fire Destroys Norwalk-Area Six Room Home

A six room rural Norwalk house owned by Mr and Mrs Walter Sparks on Route 61 south was gutted on New Year's night. Firefighters from North Fairfield and Norwalk battled the blaze which was contained to walls and attic with wiring suspected as the cause. No damage value was set. The Spar ks and their daughter and son in law, Homer and Mrs. Robinson, spent the night away from the home.

Pleads Guilty in Burglary Case in Norwalk

Roger L. Hunter an 18 year old Norwalk man pleaded guilty in Common Pleas Court to a burglary charge connected with a break in at Dublo's Carryout. Hunter was placed on probation for five years under specified conditions or face reform school confinement. Co defendant Carroll Michael Holtz 18 remains jailed and awaiting a later hearing.

Fire Ravages Dunreith Village After Train Crash

A collision of two Pennsylvania Railroad freight trains sparked a fire fueled by gasoline crude oil and ammonia that raged through Dunreith Indiana forcing 236 residents to flee in near zero temperatures. Firefighters and police withdrew as 12 000 gallon ammonia tanks risked rupture while officials awaited Air Force foam trucks and gas masks. The blaze leveled a cannery and fertilizer plant with several houses damaged and no lives lost though fumes incapacitated at least one trooper.
