The U.S. Court of Appeals split decision upheld former Rep. Adam Clayton Powell’s ouster, confirming a lower court ruling that he cannot appeal his exclusion from the House. The ruling follows a 2023 House action on Powell.
The Ohio House adopted a resolution by voice vote commemorating Sandusky founding on June 5 marking 150 years. Sponsored by Rep. Ethel Swanbeck the measure pays tribute to the wilderness effort to establish a safe prosperous community.
Two men died in an East Side cafe brawl as a mob described as a Hells Angels type gang terrorized the venue. James Tillett, 38, a white truck driver, and Roosevelt Brown, 38, a Black man, were shot during the melee while Brown was being assaulted with bottles.
Senate Republican Leader Everett M. Dirksen plans to unveil a compromise civil rights package with an open housing provision. After submission, a cloture vote is expected to be scheduled for Friday or Monday, paving the way for probable passage next week.

North Vietnamese troops zigzag trenches within 100 yards of the U S Marine Base at Khe Sanh as UPI reports echo the Dien Bien Phu tactic from 14 years earlier. Marines hold a force of about 6 000 against an estimated 16 000 attackers while U S forces bolster with 4 000 additional troops bringing total US personnel to 499 000.
Columbus developer reveals a half million dollar in city shopping plaza to be built on 24 acres between Whitlesey Avenue and Hester Street. Expected tenants include a large chain supermarket a drug store and a catalog store with future expansion possible. Construction could start after June 1 1968 with completion by March 1 1969.
Norwalk City Schools superintendent Dr Albion V Gotaas announces a five state recruiting trip to colleges in Ohio Pennsylvania West Virginia Kentucky Indiana and possibly Illinois to hire staff for next year. He cautions the exact number of new teachers is unknown and resignations are only informal. The district will require teachers in special areas.
A 12 member jury was seated in Huron County Common Pleas Court to hear the case of Richard Bentz charged with drunken driving. Bentz pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial as Ronald Freeman, assistant prosecutor, presents the state's case with Bentz represented by Murray and Murray of Sandusky. Judge Robert J. Vetter presides.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a toned-down version of the House anti riot bill unanimously. ACLU spokesman Benson A Wolman praised the panel, saying they did a fine job in the traditions of constitutional conservatism. The measure could reach a Senate vote today with a suspension of the rules.
