Dr. Benjamin Burrows, a Chicago chest disease expert, says a mysterious lung condition linked to smoking and air pollution is second to heart disease as a cause of adult disability. He notes the death rate has doubled every five years since 1945 and may exceed lung cancer rates.
UPI reports Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy argues the United States wars in Vietnam are driven by ideological aims rather than defensive harm, marking a departure from U.S. tradition against aggression. Johnson seeks permanent farm program extensions and new rural jobs and housing measures in an election-year push to strengthen farmer bargaining power.
Saigon reports say Green Berets repelled a Communist tank assault as U S warplanes targeted North Vietnamese forces in Laos. Rockets struck Tan Son Nhut and damaged a government army camp, with U S Army Special Forces aiding Vietnamese troops in the area.
League Street School principal Gale J. Leimbach reported a purse stolen from Mrs. Ralph Lindsley of Greenwich. The purse contained no disclosed amount of money. A man and boy were seen in the hall when she arrived, and the man helped unlock the door. A separate report noted Reather Ward losing a bill fold with money and cards.
Cameron Sewell of Norwalk was named first administrator of the Huron County School for Retarded Children by the new county Mental Retardation Board. He will retire from his current role June 30 and start the job in August, with the Benedict Avenue school housing two teachers and three aides. The post is part time. The school previously operated under Welfare Department oversight.
Loyal F. Chaney was elected president of the Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital board of trustees at the Monday night meeting after the annual gathering. Also chosen were J. Raymond Gerken as vice president M Leighton Battles as secretary and J W Matsch as treasurer.
Fire at Bowling Green State University destroys the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house causing an estimated $100,000 in damage. No injuries were reported.

Norwalk records Monday highs near 39 and lows around 15 with high humidity in the morning and moderate in the afternoon. Marriage licenses issued for Beebe and Lutz and for Rowe and Nead. A birth in Ashland and the death of Elizabeth Bardis, 49, in New London.
Sen. Richard B. Russell urged a tight air and sea quarantine of North Vietnam to end the war in a reasonably short time without more U.S. troops. He said intensified bombing and naval enforcement could close the North, cut rail to China, and avoid a long conflict, while opponents urged restraint and peace talks.
Norwalk police hunt a dark colored 1967 Buick Skylark believed involved in a hit and run at Milan and Cline Streets. The vehicle left the scene after ramming a guard rail and damage to its left front fender bumper headlight assembly and wheel hubcap was noted.
A Sandusky man, Jerry Kramer age 42, was thrown from his car when it rolled off State Route 6 Monday evening. He was listed in fair condition at Sandusky Memorial Hospital and cited after ward for improper speed.
Norwalk surgeon Dr. William B. Holman told the Norwalk City Hospital Association that Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital runs short of doctors. He noted 16 physicians in 1957 vs 14 now and urged considering osteopathic staff members to meet demand. He said a 1967 bylaw change to admit osteopaths was rejected nearly unanimously.
