In Cam Ranh Bay the largest mass narcotics raid involving American servicemen in South Vietnam detained forty airmen, with one additional detainee in the United States and reports of one or two more possible detentions elsewhere.
Florida after talks with the White House drops charges against four Cuban boat captains for fishing illegally in U S territorial waters. Governor Askew says he agreed to drop the charges after securing a pledge that the federal government will prosecute the captains to the fullest extent.
Apollo 14 astronauts Edgar Mitchell Alan Shepard and Stuart Roosa were released from spaceflight quarantine half a day early at Houston Space Center. Mitchell said he was glad to be back in the world and wore a beard grown in space.

ABC and CBS report Communist China seeks to buy 80 to 120 medium range jetliners like the 707 and DC8. The plan would involve Chinese training for up to 10 000 and ground crews to operate aircraft owned by third countries. Sources caution the deal may not succeed and could aim to open air routes via Pakistan Turkey or Yugoslavia.
Alvin Karpis disputes FBI Chief J Edgar Hoover taking credit for his 1936 arrest saying Hoover waited for orders before appearing and did not lead the capture. Karpis recalls the May 1936 New Orleans arrest with Barker as two dozen agents surrounded their Plymouth. he asserts Hoover did not deserve the hero status.
Norwalk City Council will discuss an ordinance to ban sale of chicks and other young or colored animals as pets or novelties, aimed at Easter. The measure, pushed by the Huron County Humane Society, seeks countywide adoption. a bond ordinance for 24 million to fund sewer work and a bid for a new fire truck also appear on the agenda.
A 16 year old Willard High School student released to parents after a bomb threat letter closed the school for four days. A 17 year old associated with a separate threat also had a preliminary hearing. Hearings set for Tuesday at 1 30 and 2 30 PM.
David R Powers 26 of 119 N Hester Sr files petitions for the city charter commission and is the 13th candidate. He has lived in Norwalk since 1967 and is an engineering technician at Gilford Instrument Laboratories in Oberlin. He served with the U S Air Force at Hickam AFB and formerly worked for Plum Brook NASA in Sandusky. He and wife Sandra have two children Dawn and Shawn. Two other candidates filed petitions with the Huron County Board of Elections Wilbur L Beck rural North Fairfield seeks re election as Greenfield Township Clerk and Thomas R White of Monroeville seeks village council.
