No Surprise Death Factored in Roosevelt Junior High Shooting

A 15-year-old student was shot dead in a Roosevelt Junior High washroom, and a John Hay High School student council president said such risks are expected in city schools. The remark came as Cleveland officials discussed safety after the incident.

Ohio to expand recreation areas with state and federal funding

Ohio plans a long range push to create more and finer recreation areas. Norville Hall announced 1.5 million dollars from the Interior Department will finance land purchases for Geneva State Park in Ashtabula County, including 425 acres and 4200 feet of Lake Erie frontage. Plans may include marinas and camping sites while awaiting legislative appropriations.

Fred Stein Enters Norwalk Charter Commission Race

Frederick T. Stein 29 James St. files to run for Norwalk charter commission. He leads the Press Store and serves as Norwalk Area Development Committee president. Stein joins five candidates for May election and outlines a push for more downtown parking. Filing deadline is 4 p.m. March 13. Voters will elect 15 commissioners if charter creation is approved.

Lorain Man Indicted In Burns Slaying

Lorain County grand jury indicted 50 year old Albert Young on first degree murder for the Feb 18 shooting death of Charlie Joe Burns at a downtown Lorain tavern. Young, arrested near the tavern, pleaded innocent in municipal court and will be arraigned in common pleas Friday. Burns, former New London resident, lived in Lorain and was reportedly shot during a pool game after an argument.

Graham Ordered To Take A Rest

Evangelist Billy Graham who had salivary gland surgery on February 10 has been ordered by doctors to rest until April 15. Dr. T W Wilson said Graham’s engagements through mid April are cancelled or postponed except for a March 14 Cleveland appearance to receive an award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. His next crusade is set to begin April 25.

Washington observed the 17th anniversary of the 1954 House shooting when Puerto Rico nationalists fired from the spectators’ gallery, wounding five members. The Senate wing blast echoed the same era of political violence and heightened security concerns.

Nixon responds to Capitol blast with shock and vow to pursue

President Nixon said the bombing was a shocking act of violence and will outrage Americans as FBI agents search for the bomber. The blast at 1:30 a.m. EST caused a serious crack in the west front wall and left debris in the Capitol.
