Mudslides bury 17 alive in Southern California floods

A 20 ton mudslide buried 17 storm refugees in a Liverado Canyon fire station, killing at least five. The disaster left about 12,500 homeless as rescue teams battled mud and floodwaters. Gov Reagan mobilized National Guardsmen, while weather officials forecast clearing skies. Two crocodiles and two hippos escaped from Acton wild animal compound amid rising floodwaters.

Church of God in Ohio fights teen bartending proposal

The Church of God in Ohio plans statewide action to oppose a study panel recommendation allowing teenagers to serve alcoholic beverages. Rev. Paul Bock says it would grant teens permission to be bartenders. Over 300 ministers at a state meeting condemned the idea and will lead an interdenominational effort to block it.

Burglars Clash With Woman Ex-Wrestler in Michigan

Barbara Louise Cole, a former wrestler and cleaning lady at a loan firm, fended off two burglars with a karate chop to one assailant and forced them to flee after being bound and gagged. She used her toe to dial the operator, who alerted police now seeking the suspects.

Toll collector finds trading stamps with 50 cent toll

St Ignace Michigan first reported story where Bucky McPhee a Mackinac Bridge toll collector noted a driver left a 50 cent toll on a dollar bill with trading stamps attached. McPhee returned the change and stamps before the driver fled, the passenger remarking stamps are being given at the bridge.

Final North Vietnamese Offensive Seizes Two Villages Near Saigon

North Vietnamese troops captured the villages of Dong Lach and Ho Nai on the northern outskirts of Saigon as part of a stated aim to reunite Vietnam. They withstood a house to house defense by 2,000 U S and South Vietnamese troops while U S artillery and air strikes bombed parts of the urban area near Bien Hoa and Long Binh, about 15 miles northwest of Saigon.

Cleveland Schools Chief Seeks Resolution After Student Grievances

Superintendent Paul W. Briggs told about 200 Negro students that their grievances from a demonstration at the administration building could be resolved. He cited John Hay High School as a venue for implementing most recommendations and hoped for a return to normalcy soon.

Northeast storm blankets New England with heavy snow

A crippling northeast storm dumps over three feet of snow on metropolitan Boston and widespread areas in New England. The blizzard has caused at least 22 deaths and pushes monthly snowfall to 36 inches, surpassing the 1893 record of 35.3 inches.

Collins GI Wounded Second Day In Viet Nam

Pfc. John R. Weidinger 2367885 of Collins was wounded on his second day in Vietnam near Quang Tri February 17. He suffered a gunshot wound to the right forearm and is treated at the 249th General Hospital Camp Drake Japan. His father and step-mother were notified by telegram from the Defense Department. He had just recovered from malaria and is a 1967 Western Reserve High School graduate.

GM recalls 4.9 million cars and trucks largest ever

General Motors charges recall of 4.9 million vehicles including 2.4 million 1965–1968 Chevrolets for exhaust fumes entering the passenger compartment and 2.5 million others to replace a quadra jet carburetor part. GM says few recalls may be unsafe and will fix at no cost to owners.

Norwalk Youth Hurt In Crash

John D. Weinert aged 17 of 31 Fruen Street was treated and released from Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital after a traffic crash. He sustained facial lacerations and tooth loss. Donald R. Hall of 12 Perrin Road was charged with failure to yield the right of way after pulling from Summit Street into Linwood Street, his car colliding with Weinert’s and driving Weinert’s vehicle into a fire hydrant.

Klondike Derby Draws 200 Scouts Across Multiple Troops

About 200 Boy Scouts and leaders compete Saturday in Huron County for the Klondike Derby at Camp Firelands in Lorain County. Seventeen patrols race 4.2 miles with five to eight scouts per sledge and stop at five towns to complete challenges such as disaster response, ravine crossing estimates, and bridge material calculations. Troop 232 of Norwalk, last year’s winner, enters two patrols. public viewing is allowed as the event runs 1 p.m. to 2–4 hours.

Grease Burns Boy in Milan Household Accident

A nine year old Milan boy, James Weese, is in fair condition at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital after a kitchen grease fire caused by a French flyer knocked over on a table. He suffered burns to his back, left foot and leg with his mother reporting improvement this morning.
