U S command reports 59 Americans killed in combat last week, the highest total this year, with noncombat deaths at 42, attributed to the Laos campaign and helicopter incidents supporting the South Vietnamese push.
Favored Jack Nicklaus started strong at the 53rd PGA Championship at PGA National East course. The field of 146 began play in bright conditions with a warm, breezy day ahead as Nicklaus carded a birdie four on the long first hole.
Communist troops backed by tanks overran the South Vietnamese paratroop base at Hill 31 in Laos, defeating a 200 man defense. It marked a second base seized by the Communists. President Thieu said government forces will push into North Vietnam as the people’s convention speech was released.
Gov John J Gilligan told a Senate subcommittee a very dangerous situation exists if unemployment is not reduced before schools close for summer. Rep Louis Stokes testified joblessness among black males aged 16 to 19 reached 42.2 percent last year, double the prior year, calling the teens a highly embittered group.
The mint will start taking orders July 1 for collectors sets of the Eisenhower silver dollar. Each proof coin costs 10 dollars and each uncirculated coin 3 dollars. The 40 percent silver coins require application forms available June 18.
Xavier University head basketball coach George Krajack and assistant Bob Watson resign effective at season end. Krajack, who arrived in 1967, posted 10-16 and 5-20 records in his first two seasons, with the current 9-14 mark, and cited a needed change in environment.

Willard police Chief Jack Fryman announced a $200 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions in this week’s bomb threat at Willard High School. The 500 student school has been closed since Monday afternoon as a search continued with up to 12 people involved.
President Nixon says the greatest danger of nuclear conflict lies in the Middle East as Soviet moves there must be resisted. He urges a peaceful settlement in the region and in Vietnam, where he calls for an immediate cease fire, troop withdrawal, POW releases, and an Indochina peace conference.
London police say Princess Anne crashed into a taxi in central London. The driver, Patrick Ling, described the princess as stony faced and shocked after the 15 mph collision. He was told to bill Buckingham Palace for about 60 dollars in damages.
Hanoi accused President Nixon of lies and accused the United States of feverishly planning attacks in Indochina. Xuan Thuy and Thieu warned of grave setbacks and possible cross border actions as peace talks continued in Paris. Bruce urged a cease fire and withdrawal talks amid escalating tensions.
Indianapolis truck driver Marshall C. Mason, 36, stole a highway patrol car after a minor accident, drove it five miles east of the Vermilion River, and died when the car plunged into the river. Norwalk wrecker crews and patrolmen recovered the vehicle using a cable and small boat after the river level dropped two feet and ice floes hindered salvage. The patrol car was towed to the Castalia post.
A Senate subcommittee heard that military undercover men investigated and kept files on church groups. Witnesses described card files on Unitarian Church members in San Antonio and infiltration of a Colorado Springs Young Adults Project group.
The measure, introduced by Rep. George E. Mastics, would classify killings by bombs or explosives as first degree murder with possible death penalties. Current law requires proof of specific intent to kill for such charges.
