Fire at the Desert Air Rest Home in Taft California killed about a dozen mental patients. caretaker Sherry Armstrong and her husband Jack rescued a 16 year old boy. authorities fear no other occupants escaped. Building may have faced condemnation after a recent fire inspection.
U.S. Sen. George McGovern warned at a Cambridge dinner that U.S. actions in Laos risk triggering World War III and Chinese intervention. He urged caution over Ho Chi Minh trail disruption and warned about broader escalation.
Israeli Ambassador Yitzak Rabin rushed home from Washington to join cabinet talks over Egypts far-reaching peace proposal. The move follows pressure from the White House for a timetable to withdraw from territory occupied in 1967 while President Nixon and President Shazar plan a Washington meeting next month.

In Aspermont and Quanah Texas, rainmaker Homer Berry contractors for Stonewall County farmers claim to coax moisture with silver iodide using a backroad rig and a boiling pot ritual. He promises five inches by March 8, after a light shower yields two tenths of an inch. Berry, a retired Air Force major from Little Rock, says heavy winds and dust followed the rain.
Norwalk High School senior Robin Christy earned a Blue Ribbon Finalist selection as her nude sculptures titled The Family The Singer The Leper and an unnamed piece advanced from Toledo awards to final judging in New York on Feb 27. Her works depict people in surf scenes and emotional moments as she pursues expressive form. Her mother Maria Christy teaches art at Norwalk High and buys materials while Robin avoids selling art preferring to give pieces away to find good homes.
Six Norwalk students earned awards at the Scholastic Awards Art Show in Toledo. Norwalk High senior Robin Christy won a blue ribbon, and Denise More also of Norwalk High received an Advisory Committee Citation for a sculptured fish.
South Vietnam’s Laos operation against the Ho Chi Minh Trail inflicted heavier losses on American forces. Eight more helicopters were shot down or heavily damaged on Thursday and today, raising official counts to 18 destroyed or damaged, with on-scene correspondents estimating possible double that total including helicopters hit on landing strips near Khe Sanh.

Dr. Arthur F. Burns, chairman of the Federal Reserve, said the nation faces a rapid recovery from the slump but warned that the policies ending the recession carry a grave risk of renewed inflation forces.
Lorain police charged Albert Young with first degree murder in the shooting death of Charlie Joe Burns 37 at the Journey Bar in Lorain. Burns, longtime bartender and pool player, died after an argument with a customer. Burns had lived in New London as a child and moved to Lorain in 1966.
Michael Tex Hergatt owner of Hergatt's Western Shop at 50 N Linwood Ave announced plans to sell the store. He started in 1945 with a lettering shop and opened the Linwood Avenue store in 1959 expanding to western apparel saddles boots and custom trophies.
