Captain Maxine Conder, 48, the sole woman among 38 captains promoted to rear admiral, is slated to lead nursing services at Philadelphia Naval Hospital. A 24 year veteran and Utah native, she follows Alene B. Duerk who became the first woman rear admiral in 1972.
Albert Robbins a herpetologist faced speeding charges when his 120 pound 17 foot python Captain escaped during a drive from Bakersfield to Los Angeles. He stopped for help from passing motorists hoping a police officer would assist. Officer Welton Lee refused to intervene and Robbins was ticketed. At court Robbins produced Captain and performed his traveling snake show. Judge Richard Thompson dismissed the speeding charge after the demonstration.
Kroger Co. announces 1974 earnings of 45.2 million on sales up 13 percent, marking a more than 50 percent rise from 29.9 million in 1973. Kroger operates 1,240 stores across 20 states.
California Highway Patrol led more than 100 patrol cars on four highways from Los Angeles to the Nevada line to keep holiday motorists at 55 mph. The effort reduced speeding, with few tickets issued, though Las Vegas casinos and motels saw it as a nuisance.

Gaymont Nursing Center plans a 300000 expansion nearly doubling capacity with 48 new beds to total 100. The project adds 25 staff and new private or semi private rooms with baths and lounges. Construction will start soon and finish in six to eight months, addressing a waiting list. The state approved plans. K and H Construction of Norwalk to build.
Northern Ohio Bank a four year old institution with about 115 million in assets entered receivership Friday night. FDIC appointed receiver at the request of the bank's board. FDIC to seek local bank participation to take over accounts. Insured deposits up to 40000 by FDIC.
The Ohio Bureau of Employment Services will operate 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday despite President's Day. Most government offices including Huron County Courthouse and Norwalk City Hall will be closed, but bureau offices stay open to ease congestion. Albert G. Giles oversees the move as administrator of Services.
The annual Hearts N Harmony Ball sponsored by local Beta Sigma Phi chapters runs from 9 to 1 at the Norwalk Armory with tickets at the door. Proceeds support the orthopedically handicapped children program at Milan Elementary School.

Rep. Jerry L. Pettis deputy Republican whip in the House died when his light airplane crashed into a mountainside above the San Bernardino pass. The crash occurred Friday as winds whipped the area.
