Cash rebates pushed early February new car sales to within 5 per cent of year earlier levels, the closest Detroit has come to matching the 1974 pace since last September. Despite the rebound since rebates began in mid January, 138,108 cars were sold, a 13 year low and 29 per cent below the Feb 1-10 1973 period.
Franklin F. Kennedy, a Columbus police officer, pleaded guilty to charges tied to crashing a $55,600 helicopter while chasing a pheasant on January 17. He faces suspension from next Sunday through March 17 and possible permanent grounding. In a separate case at Port Clinton, Ottawa County Judge Donald Wargowsky sentenced three men to lengthy terms for the Gretchen Musser kidnap slaying, with Walker and Meacham receiving 15 years to life and Meacham receiving seven to 25 years. two others faced reduced charges after plea deals.
Assistant Defense Secretary William K. Brehm says higher joblessness has created longer waiting lines of qualified recruits for the Army Navy Air Force and Marines. He cites the 8.2 percent unemployment as enabling more selective enlistments and higher quality enlistees.

Gould, Inc. of Milan plans to lay off about 15 more workers next week as auto parts plants struggle. Norwalk Mayor Wayne Goodsite opposes a seven tenths of a cent state sales tax increase tied to a $2.5 billion bond plan for Ohio cities. He favors taxing nonessential items and notes the proposal would place the measure on the June primary ballot for voter decision. Governor Rhodes pitched the plan at a Columbus mayoral conference, with Norwalk set to receive about $2 million and Willard about $1 million if approved.
