Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey met with U.S. and Vietnamese officials and flew by helicopter to three hamlets near Saigon, telling villagers they have many friends in America. He visited Tan Phu New Prosperity and two nearby hamlets escorted by armed choppers.
In Saigon area a major new offensive begins with helicopter landings. Air strikes and artillery push back Viet Cong after initial resistance. Separately in Columbus Ohio State trustees vote to scrap a $300 000 president residence plan while leaving the idea alive for potential funding. James W. Shacknessy opposes the home and suggests funding from state tax money.
Harry B. Stevens, 58, paid a $100 penalty plus court costs after pleading no contest to practicing dentistry without a license in Lakewood. He allegedly fitted a denture for a woman in the basement of his home in Cleveland.
Adam West star of the ABC TV series Batman was admitted to Bel Air Memorial Hospital with flu and exhaustion. His condition was reported as good.
Three young Ashland County men admitted to a string of burglaries in Huron County, including Norwalk cases. They confessed to thefts at Bronson and Lyme Schools, Ace Diesel, Maplehurst School and the Huron County Farm Bureau Lumber Yard, with recovered items and plans to question them further across five counties.
Auditor Charles J. Hipp blasted City Solicitor Frederick F. Waugh at a Finance Committee meeting over state statute compliance and the handling of municipal cash. He said information is insufficient to authorize further investments, noting funds are earmarked for a large electrical contract and may sit idle.
Huron County drive led by W. D. Conway reports 50 percent of a $600,000 county target toward Bowling Green University campus funding. Donations include Norwalk firms and area groups. Tri county total at 4 pm Thursday is $230,233 with Huron $45,759, Erie $172,916, Ottawa $11,558.
New London police report 42 year old Paul Sourwine of Nova is charged with car theft. The car was taken from behind a North Main Street filling station around 3 45 p m after keys were taken from the Heitzman apartment. Sourwine was arrested at the McCarty Hotel in Willard at 12 30 a m.
James E. Hyatt 39 of 11 Adams Street was cited for reckless operation after his car collided with a diesel truck parked at 226 Milan Avenue. Hyatt said he fell asleep. The truck, owned by Casey Truck Leasing, was parked by Lewis H. Sellers 34 of 215 Milan Avenue who heard the crash and did not see it. Hyatt sustained cuts and front car damage was extensive.
The Ohio Public Utilities Commission plans a public hearing at 10 a.m. February 24 in Cleveland City Council chambers to show cause why Santee Bus Lines should not lose its permit. PUCO cites repeated failure to provide safe dependable transportation after an investigation triggered by public, municipal and law enforcement complaints.
Erie County commissioners heard pro and con testimony on vacating a 1,377 foot Bragg Road segment in Lyme Township. Four farmers led by Edward Close oppose the move citing farm machinery hardships. Norfolk and Western Railway plans to add tracks for a new classification yard near Route 4 accompany the petition filed by 73 residents. The hearing adjourned to 9 a.m. February 21 as residents, trustees, and officials weigh safety and access impacts.
Norfolk and Western Railway officials testified at the Huron County hearing on Bragg Road vacation. Vice president Walter Clement argued an overpass would hinder yard operations by blocking vision and future expansion while noting average daily car movements at 41 miles. Farmers oppose the closing.
Mrs Enid Denham librarian at Norwalk Public Library says the library will be closed Saturday for Lincoln's Birthday and will reopen Monday.
