Fire damages State Street home from candle play

A fire at 46 State St caused upstairs and closet damage described as moderate after three children aged 8 5 and 4 played with a lit candle. Water damage was mainly on the lower level. Firefighters were on scene about two hours, blaze under control in 30 minutes. Nearby, City Hall utility bill window hours were shortened to 8 30 to 4 daily and 8 30 to 11 30 Saturdays. Mayor Harold Finch announced the change to help workers complete paperwork. In Huron County ADC Supplemental Program funds will resume January 1 after a half mill levy passed November 5. An example shows a two person family receiving 9 more dollars monthly, a three person family 12. ADC cases in late 1968 totaled 128, affecting about 450 to 500 people. Light snow in northern Ohio expected tonight. roads slick but few accidents reported.

Winter Weather Watch Brings Snow to Northwest Ohio

Snow likely late today with heavy bursts possible tonight. Windy with rising temperatures then falling, highs in the low 30s and lows in the low 20s. Wednesday brings more flurries and extreme cold. Norwalk Sunday forecast lows 16 and highs 28. Births include three newborns in New London and Willard. Marriage licenses issued for Holmes Westbrook and Lehnert Panyard pairs. Deaths listed for seven residents including Kindle Shepherd and Reginald Marett.

Vetter Warns Huron Officials To Balance Rights

Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Vetter swore in Huron County commissioners Arthur Herner and Donald Robertson urging them to protect both majority and minority rights and to pay less heed to noisy minorities. Photographers were warned that courtroom pictures are prohibited. Also sworn in were Recorder Jay Thomas Clerk of Courts Dana Call Engineer Urban Livengood and County Court Judge Phillip White.

Trucker Fined Fifty After Spray Claim Sparks Case

Clarence Ward of Norwalk was found guilty of disobeying a police officer in Monroeville and fined 50 dollars plus costs. Ward appeals, while awaiting trial on a second charge over his driver’s license. The incident involved Ward’s claim that policeman Leonard Conners sprayed him with a disabling chemical.

Suspect linked to Norwalk car thefts held by Cleveland police

Cleveland police think they have a lead in a car theft ring that hit Norwalk in June. A suspect in custody bears the serial number of a 1967 Thunderbird stolen June 17 from George Manyak Ford Inc. Used Cars. A second car was taken the same way in Erie County. police say the cases may form part of a larger ring and will release a photo for identification.

Three canoes overturn in Vermilion River rescue misfire

Six Cleveland area canoeists were found safe after rough water overturned three canoes on the Vermilion River near Wakeman. Ed Stryker and wife waded to shore to seek help. four on a river island walked ashore before responders arrived. Those safe included Carl Zwierlein 48 and his sons John 21 Jim 13 and Joyce Steinbach 20 of Westlake.
