Price Commission approves landlord rent increases from December 29 to cover higher costs and improvements. Expected rises 3 to 3.5 percent, with no firm ceiling. critics warn possible up to 30 percent.
Mostly sunny and warmer today with a high in the 40s. Tonight and Friday will be mostly cloudy and warmer with lows in the upper 30s and highs in the 40s to lower 50s. precipitation chances rise to 20 percent Friday. Also includes marriage license applications for Gary P. Byron and Vivian Y. Draper, births in several area towns, and obituaries for Kenneth G. Heberling and James Harper.
In Euclid Ohio a mass for John Fitzpatrick who was fatally stabbed as he stood with his children in a Santa Claus line at a downtown department store. Mrs Fitzpatrick spoke of the tragedy as a bad dream and reflected on his plans for the new baby and mortgage payments.
Rep. John E. Moss says FDA officials met with six U.S. tinsel makers on August 12 and arranged to halt production of lead based tinsel after the 1972 Christmas season. He calls the deal and the agency’s actions shocking.
The State Division of Highways plans July installation of 35 eight by thirty foot electric signs on the Santa Monica Freeway, one mile apart. Unlike stadium boards they will display practical alerts such as accident ahead, freeway closures, and detours.
Norwalk Post Office, led by Postmaster Robert F. O'Donnell, handled 800000 pieces in a 10 day period with a peak of 33000 on December 15 and 30000 the day before. District Manager Szollosi cited a regional 2.1 percent rise in originating mail and a 14 percent parcel post increase over last year. Local parcels reached 4268 delivered this month with rural and box deliveries expected to double totals. The force of 36 staff kept pace without extra workers as customers mailed early and zip codes aided delivery.
The Treasury reports foreign governments owe the U S about 50 billion dollars in loans dating to World War I. Britain tops the list with 4.1 billion owed of 5.6 billion from World War II credits plus 10.2 billion in WWII and WWI obligations.
President Nixon signed a 1.6 billion three year cancer program aimed at defeating cancer as a national priority. The plan funds early detection of oral cervical and breast cancers and establishes 15 treatment and research centers under the National Cancer Institute with a new presidential watchdog panel over NCI NIH.
Wallace L. Duncan, a Washington DC lawyer hired by the Finch administration, submitted a bill totaling 1 887.06 for 35.3 hours of legal services and expenses through December 1. The itemized charges include 1 588.50 in legal fees and 299.56 in travel and incidentals.
Authorities stopped an escape plan at Huron County Jail after a hacksaw and improvised rope were found. Deputies said inmates attempted to dig through a second floor wall and use a non welded south window as an exit. The sheriff noted possible outside help and that lie detector tests may be used.
