A four story dormitory blaze at Aquinas Hall, Providence College, killed seven female students and injured 15 others. In Boca Raton Florida Charles Giel a longtime chauffeur to Wilfred Cohen claims to be Walter Cronkite's driver after wrecking a $13 000 Cadillac. Cronkite denies owning a car or employing a chauffeur. No charges were filed and Cohen family plans to address the incident.

Forrest Gregg resigns as Cleveland Browns head coach effective at season end. Gregg will coach the final game Sunday at Seattle, with owner Art Modell already aware of the move. The club announced the decision via vice president Nate Wallack.
Pete Hadhazy and Gregg met privately amid reports of Gregg’s resignation. Gregg told the Cleveland Press he would finish the season and decide later, after a rocky stretch that included a 9-0 loss to the Rams and a 37-14 defeat to San Diego. He is a former Packers star and Hall of Famer in Canton. The Browns stood at 5-2 midway this year after a 9-0 start in 1960s terms, with Modell promising a reexamination of the organization following criticism.
