The Sandusky commission approved a 1 percent income tax on residents and nonresidents working in the city to raise about 800000 annually, with 60 percent to the general fund and 40 percent for capital improvements. J Emerson Davis of Toledo will implement the plan.
Huron County airport zoning moves forward after hearings with no opposition. Proposals limit heights within 10 000 feet of the airport and establish an airport zoning appeals board. Landowners must mark and light boundaries. penalties cap at 100 per day. A final county hearing is pending. Separately Senator Young plans Vietnam trip as part of 1968 Democratic National Convention strategy.
Dr Benjamin Spock led the second day of Stop the Draft Week protests in New York and was arrested with more than 200 antidraft demonstrators. The day saw hundreds of protesters burn what they claimed were their draft cards as part of the action.
Considerable cloudiness with intermittent rain and little temperature change through Wednesday. High in the 40s, low tonight in the upper 30s. Birth notices list several new daughters and sons for families in Norwalk Willard Monroeville New Washington and Greenwich. Obituaries include Gerald Walton Fred B Steer and Annette Jameson with ages and residence.
President Johnson challenged rumors that Cabinet members planned to resign and said only McNamara might depart, while noting that some unnamed aides spread stories. He dismissed talk of others leaving and cited a two to three day rumor cycle. Wirtz was rumored to resign but denied. Rusk and Freeman were also speculated.
A team of 14 educators led by Robert Regula of Bellevue High School inspected Norwalk High School for the North Central Association. The two day visit included classroom tours and facility reviews with a final report due within two weeks and possible accreditation status decision in March.
UPI reports about 800 Communist troops overran Dak Son New Life hamlet 90 miles north of Saigon and killed about 300 civilians as they attacked shelters where refugees hid. The strike marks the war’s noted slaughter of innocents with casualties in the South Vietnamese village.
Miss Annette Jameson 75 died from head and other injuries after being struck by a car on Milan Avenue November 18. She had been at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital since the crash. Jeffery D. Callihan 23 of 23 Newton Terrace was not charged. Services set for Thursday at 1 p.m. at Heaston Hill Funeral Home.
Whitney Field is being rebuilt as a crown leveled high school football field with a new track. Volunteers estimate the project at 12000 dollars with donated equipment, materials, and labor led by John Baltes of A J Baltes Inc. and engineer Urban Livengood Jr. The work includes moving structures, track drainage, topsoil reuse, and curb construction, with city crews replacing underground wires.
