President Nguyen Van Thieu announced a 24 hour Christmas cease fire for the Republic of Vietnam to begin at 6 p.m. December 24. The surprise move came during a regular television newscast and was issued by a spokesman from Thieu's office.
The report states temperatures will run 3 to 5 degrees above normal over five days starting Tuesday. Highs in the north will be in the lower 40s and in the mid 40s in the south, with overnights in the low 30s.
Mostly cloudy today with light rain or drizzle in the morning. Highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s. Rain possible Tuesday with little temperature change. Norwalk Sunday highs 46 and lows 29. Rainfall 0.24 inch. Births list several local families with newborns. Deaths include Blum, Burkin, Riley, Pierce, Holzhauer and others.
National Commission on Violence says the Chicago protests outside the Democratic convention were overwhelmingly police sided with and that officials conditioned police to accept violence. Abbie Hoffman praised findings but said it would not curb street clashes. The report was compiled by 90 investigators led by Daniel Walker with FBI assistance.
Kyle Atkins, 44, of 0 Reed Street, died from a chest wound in a living room scuffle with his brother in law Billy Hatfield, 26, at Hatfield’s home. Coroner to hold inquest. preliminary findings suggest justifiable homicide. Atkins’ blood alcohol was 0.208 percent.
The Citizens' Tax Study Committee reports after a seven hour session debating city finance and potential income tax. The 10 page report will be released tonight at 8 in the council chambers with council members present and absent.
North Fairfield reports a large barn on Ralph Walcher’s Route 162 farm burned Sunday night destroying 1968 potato harvest estimated at 75 000 to 80 000 bushels. Firefighters from North Fairfield and Greenwich battled flames until 5 30 a m with visibility up to five miles.
A Marine on leave, Michael D. McClure, 20, of Fremont pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle without the owner's consent. He received a $200 fine and 90 days in jail, both suspended by Mayor Harold Finch. The car, owned by George H. Walker of Norwalk, was found in Clyde at 12:35 a.m. and McClure was arrested after hitchhiking through Norwalk. He said he was tired, cold, drinking, and planned to go to Fremont.
The Ohio Health Department criticizes Norwalk for polluting creeks and fields via 75 percent combined sewers. City must install a separate storm sewer network, upgrade infrastructure, and convert to sanitary lines, costing millions and prompting public concern. Health officials call for long range steps and time payment plans.
