More than 15 000 students start the 1964 65 school year in Huron County with two new superintendents a new principal and additions to one school plant. New London South Central Lyme Willard and St Francis Xavier Willard open this week with classes. Others resume Sept 8 or Sept 9 across Western Reserve Bellevue Plymouth Monroeville Norwalk and St Pauls parochial schools.
NORWA: 135th YEAR NO 200 and three parochial systems total 15 290. Norwalk has the highest with 3 150 expected in public schools and 1 046 in St Pauls. Enrollments in Western Reserve Bellevue St Francis New London Plymouth Lyme Willard Monroeville South Central St Josephs listed. Dr Sturgis R Corbin named new superintendent of Norwalk City schools replacing James H McBride. Bellevue selects R L Smith former Lakota superintendent to succeed E S Glasgo who retires. St Pauls appoints Rev as high school principal.
In North Philadelphia the weekend Negro riots and looting left 348 injured, including many police, with curfew maintained by Mayor Tate and 1,500 officers in the Jungle area. Police arrested 369 people as a special City Hall court processed cases, while patrols, riot clubs, and patrol cars kept watch amid continued vandalism on the northern fringe of the damaged district.
Steel-helmeted police broke up a near riot between feuding Negro and Puerto Rican groups in Manhattan's Lower East Side Sunday night. Shots were fired at fire bomb throwers. Three Molotov cocktails were thrown at a Negro occupied tenement. two Puerto Ricans were arrested on arson charges.
Chicago reports packing plants laid off workers in the National Farmers Organization holding action moved to recall. Wilson and Co. workers were due back today in Omaha Kansas City Cedar Rapids and Albert Lea. Armour and Co. would reopen the South St. Paul plant if today’s animal run matched late last week.
Nimbus-A returned to earth high quality weather images sent to over 60 stations worldwide via two television channels and an infrared device. Senator Javits hinted he might back President Johnson in November if three issues cut across party lines including extremism nuclear weapons and civil rights campaign policies.
In Detroit UPI reports the United Auto Workers and Chrysler Corp align to draft a new three-year agreement covering 74,000 workers before the 10 a.m. September 9 strike deadline.
Weather clears tonight then sunny and warmer Tuesday with low 52 to 58 and high 81 to 86 Sunday high 89. Five day outlook shows above normal temperatures and scattered thunder showers late week. Births include a girl to Charles and wife at 54 54 State and several newborns in New London Berlin Heights and Woodlawn. Oriole Bailey and Aunt Jesse, cousins of Lyndon Johnson, cannot vote due to Christadelphian beliefs. Johnson visits them at the LBJ ranch after the Democratic convention. Lynda Bird Johnson, age 20, is one year too young to vote in Texas, reflecting the family sentiment.
The 16th Street Baptist Church reopens with a rededication service attended by about a quarter of its 675 members. The only hymns heard inside replace the past era of civil rights mass meetings after the September 1963 dynamite blast killed four girls Denise McNair Diane Robinson Cynthia Wesley and Addie Mae Collins. The church was rebuilt at a cost of 200000, largely funded by contributions.
In Saigon the Viet Cong expected to launch a major push on outposts as rural officials flee provinces around the capital. Mekong Delta supervisors slow to move as Nguyen Khanh, ex-president now premier, plans to address the political crisis with Nguyen Xuan Oanh acting premier. U S officials affirm Khanh remains prime minister and receive limited support.
Phillip Hampton Jr. goes on trial before a three judge panel in Common Pleas Court charged with raping a Willard mother. The woman testified and identified Hampton, recounting an early February 1 attack and a threat to kill. She fled to a neighbor before police were summoned.
Edgar Lea of Croydon says he told two Wolf Cubs to seek a new good deed after they warned drivers to slow for a police radar speed trap down the road.
