A new sport dubbed skurfskating appears on East Elm Street Hill. Participants attach a single roller skate to a board and ride down the slope then dive off to regain control at the bottom. Local enthusiasts describe it as a mix of skiing surfboarding and roller skating.
Attendance on Monday at the Ohio State Fair fell to an estimated 22,861, below the 1963 pace, with four day total about 313,519. Gov James A. Rhodes planned to meet officials and tour the fair seeking improvements while declaring youth weekends and free admission for under 18 on Sept 5–7.
Erie County boards certify a merger referendum for Milan and Berlin districts to appear on the November 3 ballot. The petition drive gathered 661 valid signatures, exceeding the 511 required. 1,168 signatures were submitted. A new high school would be built for the merged district if approved.
Weather clears tonight with cooler air, tonight low 51 to 57 and Wednesday high 75 to 80. Marriage license applicants include Kenneth R. Hopkins and Constance J. Miller of Greenwich among several other couples listed. Births noted for four families and deaths include Fred J. Swartz, 81, Norwich Township.
A three judge panel considers a defense motion to suppress evidence in the Phillip Hampton Jr. trial on illegal search and seizure. Defense attorney Paul Miller seeks exclusion of clothing articles tied to Hampton’s arrest after police chief Calvin C. Fillings testified about items taken from Hampton’s apartment following the alleged February 1 rape.
Development Director George E. Wilson will resign at year end to start his own firm and will submit his resignation on September 14. The $18,000 a year post becomes effective January 1, 1965, with deputy Frederick P. Neuenschwander favored to succeed. Wilson plans to offer Ohio and neighboring states technical project management services. He calls his tenure enjoyable yet frustrating and credits Governor Rhodes with spurring growth awareness.
New York’s GOP withheld full backing of the national ticket despite peace overtures from Goldwater aides. State leaders, many liberals, want Goldwater to define positions before campaigning. Keating wins reelection renomination as unity marks meetings with only brief Goldwater references. Nixon backs Keating but plans to stump for Goldwater Miller.
Komarek announces purchase of 132 W. Main St Norwalk the former Hardy home. Move planned Sept 30 to relocate business and residence with renovations including a smoking and coffee room. Operations will continue at 175 Benedict Ave through September and Komarek plans closer friendlier service.
