Becky Godwin 14, adopted daughter of Gov Mills E Godwin Jr, remains in critical condition at General Hospital after being struck by lightning. Authorities report her vital signs are more stable though condition stays critical.
North Vietnamese soldiers fired 59 mortar shells at the Duc Lap Special Forces camp today renewing attacks after a four day siege ended Sunday. Marine spokesmen reported the heaviest shelling in weeks with 214 rounds on Leatherneck outposts, killing five Marines and wounding 23.
Doctors say former President Dwight D. Eisenhower remains under care with heart irritability and abnormal extra beats, but show cautious optimism about his overall condition today.
In Chicago Hubert Humphrey campaigners announced 271 mayors backing the Vice President. Columbus Mayor M. E. Sensenbrenner spoke little before angrily leaving as the event ended. In New York Kay Francis died at 65 after a long illness in her East Side apartment.

The Erie County Sheriff arrests James Davidson and Mike Church both 18 of Berlin Heights on breaking and entering charges related to a string of burglaries vandalism and shoplifting in Berlin Heights and Norwalk. Four juveniles and two adults from Berlin Heights are being questioned as the investigation extends for about four more days. Police report most stolen merchandise recovered and note several burglaries began in February at the Archery Club on Chapin Road.
Sen Edward M Kennedy said he would go to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, while sailing near Hyannisport Massachusetts. Staff denied knowledge of his arrival time and no speech for a memorial film had been taped. He called former Ohio Gov Michael DiSalle to oppose being nominated.
