Muriel Humphrey faced boos and mixed emotion as her husband Hubert Humphrey secured the nomination. She appeared torn between pride and sorrow while delegates debated and cheered, her family present in the box as she watched the proceedings from the hall.
SAIGON reports a summer lull ends as 308 U.S. servicemen were killed in battle last week, the deadliest since early June. Communist losses reached 4,755 with 1,144 U.S. wounded. The toll pushes American casualties toward 200,000 as fighting continued nationwide.
NBC President Julian Goodman invited Hubert H. Humphrey and Richard M. Nixon to a two hour debate on November 3 1968 subject to congressional approval of a time rule suspension. The invitations went to both candidates before the Democratic nomination was decided.

Area residents condemn police action against demonstrators in downtown Chicago amid clashes near the Democratic National Convention. 178 arrests reported, 39 injured. National Guardsmen held lines as 3,000 protesters faced 800 guardsmen across Michigan Avenue.
Charles W. Arnold Jr of Willard Ohio says the convention’s tonight outcome will shape November votes. He backs Sargent Shriver as VP to bridge hawk and dove factions and cites Shriver as aligning with Kennedy views. Muskie is cited by reports as leading candidate.
