Government statistics show the consumer price index climbed in July driven by higher food prices and a Labor Department forecast that prices will continue to rise through the year.
Detroit reports progress in contract talks between UAW and the automakers with two barriers cleared by negotiation and the NLRB. In Santa Barbara California actor Paul Muni aged 69 dies of heart trouble at home after famed roles in Scarface Juarez and The Good Earth.
Gregory A. Kaufman a 19 year old of Pipe Street Sandusky pleaded guilty to ordering a drink of Vodka at Friendly Corners on August 13. He received 30 days in jail and a 100 dollar fine with 50 dollars and 28 days suspended under a one year liquor law compliance condition. A borrowed Selective Service card led to police attention after bar staff doubted the cardholder’s Georgia resident description. Kaufman fled but later surrendered. Judge Robert J Wiedemann imposed the sentence.

Vandals sprayed Nor walk High School and at least five nearby cars with red and green paint overnight. Reports include John P. Teglovic at 1 15 a m saying his car at 54 W Main St was painted on multiple panels and doors. Adlai Ames at 183 Scottwood Ave reported his car and a neighbor’s vandalized as well. Bellevue is checking on a similar incident using hand cream.
The Huron County Board of Elections deferred ruling on Raymond Chapin’s First Ward Council bid after deeming his telegram acceptance inadmissible under law. They voted to seek the state Attorney General’s guidance before deciding.
Leon Riley Co. received a $100,159 contract to widen and improve Columbus Avenue at Plum Brook as part of NASA Lewis Research Center awards totaling over $5.7 million in July contracts. The listing names multiple firms earning major awards during the month.
Park owner Ernstberger was fined 25 in Huron County Court after pleading guilty to installing an illegal sewer system at his U. S. 250 trailer park. The fine was suspended if he ceases operation. John C. Patler, a former No. 4 official in the American Nazi party and once allied with George Lincoln Rockwell, is charged with Rockwell's murder in Arlington Virginia. Patler, 29, was arrested near the crime scene and held on $50,000 bond awaiting arraignment after Rockwell was fatally shot in a parking lot before a beauty parlor.
Lawrence C. Nickols reports BB holes in his car and truck on Parsons Drive while he was on vacation. Police note this incident is part of a spate of BB gun damage cases investigated in the past two weeks.
A Norwalk couple Mr and Mrs Forrest W Francisco were treated at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital after a Friday night three car collision at East Main Garden Street. Police cited 16 year old Gary A Roth for failing to yield and 17 year old Michael J Brooks for failing to stop in assured clear distance.
