Coast Guard searches Lake Erie for downed parachutists

Coast Guard Lt. Thomas B. Irish Jr led a multiagency search for parachutists dropped over Lake Erie. The operation used 20 to 25 boats, two helicopters, and an Air Force plane with driving teams from Erie and Summit Counties aiding. Seas were three feet and water 72 to 73 degrees as crews worked through the day and night.

Radar Fix On Wrong Plane? Parachutists Missing After Lake Erie Jump

Parachute instructor John Deegan says a radar fix may have tracked the wrong aircraft as 19 of 21 jumpers landed in Lake Erie Sunday. He describes jumps near Ortner Field and reports of chutes seen in Huron Vermilion and Lorain as search continues for the missing aviators.

Lorain Man Describes Rescue Of 2 Skydivers, Waves Damage Boat

Lorain resident Dean Phillips recounted rescuing two parachutists from Lake Erie in rough five foot seas while another victim died. He and companions also found the body of Dorsie Kitchen of Akron and recovered parachute gear. Coast Guard and police expanded search for missing skydivers in the chaotic aftermath of the 21 overseas jump.

Skydivers Over Lake Erie Disaster Leaves Two Survivors

19 veteran parachutists took part in a mass jump over Lake Erie. Robert Coy, 29, of Springfield, and Bernard Johnson, 30, of West Richfield, survived after landing in the lake and being rescued within 10 minutes. Coy, with 262 prior jumps, said the shock of hitting water was profound, while Johnson noted his chute held and helped him stay buoyant. Relatives waited at Huron City Fire Hall as crews searched for the missing 15.
