Carter completes Mississippi River cruise with mixed cheers

President Carter and family disembarked the Delta Queen in St Louis after a 659 mile weeklong river trip seen as the most enjoyable of his life. Mexico rejects US request to fund oil spill damages

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry rejected Washington’s plea for help paying millions in damages from the Ixtoc 1 oil spill off Campeche Bay. The statement criticized the U.S. for publicizing the request and said Mexico needs time to respond. Oil had flowed to 1.91 million barrels since June 3 with cap not expected until October. Ohio oil officials say gasoline should be available for Labor Day weekend but price worries grow as costs rise.

Ward to fix dangerous Franklin stove installations nationwide

The Federal Trade Commission said Montgomery Ward sold over 200000 Franklin stoves and wood furnaces with unclear installation rules. Ward agrees to notify buyers of free relocations or heat shield installations and offers refunds, removal, and room restoration at no charge. In California, tests show DRCP pesticide in over a third of wells across 24 counties, mainly in San Joaquin Valley agricultural areas.

Woman finally receives honorable WWI discharge in ceremony

Estelle Pheeney, 61 years after service, is honored with an official discharge from the army. A former member of the Signal Corps Female Telephone Operators Unit in France in World War I, she previously never received an official discharge. She lives in Jamestown, Rhode Island, and witnessed the presentation by Secretary of the Army Clifford Alexander.

Boxboard to seek court order over strike at plant

Boxboard officials plan a restraint order in Huron County Common Pleas Court this afternoon to stop pickets from blocking truck access at the St Marys Street plant amid recent clashes with striking workers. VP John Wyatt Sr and attorney Henry Young were unavailable for comment. Local 731 president Ralph Butler described a near collision involving a departing truck. Police say two drivers cited for operating rented trucks without chauffeur licenses will have the citations nullified.

Pleasant Street School addition dedication set for Tuesday

Dedication ceremonies for the new Pleasant Street School addition are scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday with an open house from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Norwalk schools superintendent James E. Rubright invites all area residents to attend, noting the new facility will please the community. The school houses kindergarten and grades 4, 5, and 6, with William Conway serving as principal.

Price war looms as burger giants cut prices
