In Sanford Florida UPI reports a gray squirrel named Twiggy trained by Chuck Best to water ski on styrofoam and 9 inch skis behind a remote controlled boat at 12 mph. Twiggy prefers peanuts, cannot forage alone, and rests on Best’s shoulder when tired.
American communists begin a four day national convention in Detroit with about 400 delegates and support from more than 25 foreign countries including the Soviet Union.
President Carter rode out a squall on the Delta Queen as 70 to 75 mph winds battered the paddlewheeler between Burlington and Fort Madison Iowa. The ship anchored after the 30 minute storm with only superficial damage and Carter praised the crew saying well done as the cruise continued from St Paul to Hannibal and Mark Twain sites.
The Boxboard Packaging strike sees clashes at the plant while union officials and company leaders contest incidents. Ralph Butler accuses a night supervisor of a near fatal maneuver, and police issue two chauffeur’s licenses tickets amid a blocked exit. Union and company wage offers are publicly debated as talks stall.
A 55 year old man was struck by lightning while mowing his lawn in Houston on Sunday. He was not seriously injured, in stable condition at a hospital today, and described as in pain. He fell to the sidewalk and suffered a cut to the back of his head but was not burned.

A 22 year old Norwalk man John T Hurst at 9 Marion Drive seeks to sue the city alleging police brutality after being dragged from a car by four officers during an arrest on July 28. His attorney Frank Janik has met with city officials. The suspect was treated and released from Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital. He faces resisting arrest and speeding charges with a jury trial requested for the resisting arrest count.
Buffalo residents nickname Lowell Ferguson days after the Western Airlines captain landed at Buffalo instead of Sheridan Wyoming. First Officer James Bastiani gets two weeks suspension and Second Officer David Webster is reprimanded. Ferguson faces two months back to pilot training while airline officials stress adherence to radio navigation aids.
