Vandals started multiple blazes at vacant houses on Toledo's near west side over a five hour span. One fire was sparked by a firebomb, authorities said as they investigated the incidents.
The Defense Department said two U S Navy AOA Intruder aircraft, each with a two person crew, were attacked by four MIG fighters as they entered clouds at about 6 000 feet altitude before disappearing. The last radio contact warned that MIGs had been sighted.
The Shah of Iran completes a two day visit with President Johnson and a joint communique affirming Iran’s aim to keep a strong military establish ment as a stabilizing force in the Middle East. They agree on water needs and using the UN charter to settle the Mideast crisis and avoiding a wider war in Vietnam.
City moves toward normal as curfew limits ease after three nights of 8 p.m. restrictions. Police said arrests were scattered in the first hours of the 11 p.m. curfew.

UPI reports that in two days North Vietnam shot down six American planes, marking the greatest three day loss in the war. Lt. David Waldrop, from Nashville, downed two MIGs in one dogfight. Air losses include outages near Hanoi Haiphong with SAM and flak defenses weakening U.S. air power and leaving ten pilots missing or presumed dead or captured.
In Columbus the GOP pushed to pass a $300 million school aid tax hike but the House rejected the bill 59 to 38. With 66 votes needed for passage due to the emergency clause, leaders sought votes to reassemble support or move the measure without the clause, delaying new funds for schools 90 days but allowing $74.9 million in higher education to be released immediately.
The United States and the Soviet Union announced a joint draft treaty at the Geneva disarmament conference to ban spread of nuclear armaments. Key issues include control and inspection of installations with Western and Soviet bloc positions differing on who conducts oversight. Approval by the U.N. General Assembly remains required for effect.
Jim Westerhold tore ligaments in his leg during a city softball game with the Doc's Angels. He is expected to need crutches for about a month while his house, being painted, continues under a painted surprise from teammates.
Huron County Board of Elections will meet Saturday to decide if a telegram from Raymond G. Chapin can count as written acceptance for the office. Chapin, vacationing in New Hampshire, sent the telegram after withdrawing previously and Lawrence Ford’s withdrawal due to ill health. Ohio law requires a written acceptance and the 4 p.m. deadline passed Wednesday. Board members include John Hogsett Dorothy Stapf Helen Lippert and Edwin Selfe with party affiliations noted.
Fierce fighting in Vietnams northern region last week pushed U S casualties above 90 000. The week saw 108 American deaths and 883 wounded, lifting the total to 12 605 dead 77 153 wounded and 708 missing in action. The number listed as missing fell by one to 708.
Two 16 year old Willard youths, arrested in Indiana for a crime there, appeared in Huron County Juvenile Court. Judge Russell T. Antrim continued the first case for 10 days to allow family to hire counsel. The second case was set for 1 p.m. today.
Angry House Armed Services members condemn the Advisory Commission on Civil Disorder for proposing a Defense Department review of National Guard officer qualifications. Rep. F Edward Hebert says the move is precipitous and unwarranted while Rep. William Bray says press reports unfairly cast the Guard as incompetent. The panel largely backs Hebert aside from Rep. Nedzi.
Bellevue man Harold Bumb sues Frank Houck of Attica in Huron County Common Pleas for 15000 dollars claiming negligence caused a 1963 accident that injured Bumb’s 5 year old son Gary with a double skull fracture and concussion and ongoing epilepsy while Houck was visiting in the Bumb home on Bismark Road.
