Russian trawler rescues four Virginia men at sea

A Soviet intelligence gathering trawler spotted a drifting disabled fishing boat and towed it after signaling a passing U S Navy ship. All four Virginia Beach men were rescued and in good condition and flown to Norfolk Naval Air Station.

Lincoln heir leaves estate to Christian Science Church

Mary Lincoln Beckwith's will, probated in Bennington County, leaves the 1,000 acre Hildene estate near Manchester and $450,000 to the Christian Science Church in Boston. She died July 10, 1975 at Rutland Hospital at age 77, granddaughter of Robert Todd Lincoln. The will requires the property be kept in memorial to her mother and grandparents if possible.

Akron Officer Shot Dead at Truck Terminal

An Akron policeman was shot to death at the Shippers Dispatch Trucking Terminal around 8 am. The officer's name was being withheld pending family notification. Sheriff's deputies investigated the shooting with no immediate indication of motive or arrests.

Woman Hallows Boa Threat as Son’s Girlfriend Delivers Gift

Mrs. Lee Green, 54, of Cleveland, found a three foot boa constrictor inside a large bag handed by her son’s girlfriend who said the gift was for her son. Shocked, Green called police and the snake was removed. She intends to prosecute the girlfriend.

Weather Outlook With Showers Then Sunshine

Weather forecast notes showers and thunderstorms tonight with locally heavy rain and humidity around 65 percent. Lows near upper 60s to low 70s, winds 10 to 15 mph, gusty in storms. Sunday becomes mostly sunny and warmer highs 85 to 90 with a 20 percent rain chance. Agricultural rainfall expected one half to one inch, up to two inches locally.

Utilities Will Spend 1 Million On Image

Ohio's eight electric utilities plan a year long campaign costing 1 million to improve public image and explain cost and supply issues. Arthur G. Green of the Ohio Electric Utility Institute notes customer concern and a need to better communicate how power is financed sourced and delivered. Participating firms include Cincinnati Gas & Electric, Cleveland Electric Illuminating, Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric, Dayton Power & Light, Monongahela Power, Ohio Edison, Ohio Power, and Toledo Edison.

Former Greek dictator faces death sentence in treason case

George Papadopoulos Stylianos Pattakos and Nickolaos Makarezos were sentenced to death by firing squad for the 1967 coup. The court indicated executions would not be carried out with a final constitutional phase possible for sentence reduction.

Bellevue Man Robbed At Gunpoint On Ohio 113

Raynard Bruckner of Bellevue was forced off the road by three white men on Ohio 113 east of Bellevue. A revolver was used to demand cash. he surrendered $285 and received $5 back. The group then fled west in a car. A similar robbery occurred Aug 4 on Lovers Lane Road near Coho Dam.

Willard Branch Office Closed by County Clerk

The Willard office of the Huron County Clerk of Courts will discontinue after three months of Tuesday afternoon operation. Clerk Clark Hunter cited low use and high costs, and said southern county residents will be served by alternate methods being studied.

Reward Offered For Hit Skipper

Mrs. Fabian Leimeister offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of three men in a gold colored car suspected of a hit and run at 3 a.m. August 15. Her 1970 Chevrolet Capri was struck rear side and totaled in the incident. She did not disclose the reward amount.

Butz to Leave Cabinet After Current Term Ends

Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz announced plans to leave the administration at term end and support President Ford's re election bid. He told a SOUTH BEND television station he would return to Indiana in 1976 after previously serving as Purdue University dean of agriculture and being appointed by Nixon.

U S Pledges Aid to Israel in Interim Pact

Government sources say the United States pledged to aid Israel and guarantee oil supplies if attacked by a major power as part of an Israeli Egyptian interim peace accord. The pledge is non automatic and calls for consultations, not an immediate defense commitment. The agreement also includes $2 billion in economic aid and advanced weaponry.

Federal Judge W Arthur Garrity Jr requires the Boston School Committee to hire 914 security aides at a cost of about 2 million dollars to staff 162 of the city s 200 schools as mandatory busing begins September 8. More than 24 000 students are to be based under a desegregation order.
