The American Federation of Teachers moves to raise a political war chest of one million dollars to back candidates aligned with education. President David Selden says funds will support any national slate promising pro education policies. The AFL-CIO affiliate agenda ties to Nixon's wage price freeze at its 55th convention.

The Rev Thomas Reynolds of St Marys issues letters outlining a tuition option for parents. Total tuition comes to 100 with 25 quarterly or 10 monthly payments. He offers personal loans at 0.5 percent monthly. Book and registration fees range 18 to 55 plus a 1 tax per student to the Toledo Diocese.
Norwalk teachers face a pay freeze under Nixon price controls though contracts started before Aug 15 may still allow increases. Non teaching staff gain 8 to 12 percent. teachers’ raises 4 to 16 percent were approved but not implemented. Base salaries last year ranged from 4,900 to 10,000 with new scales up to 11,200.
Fire units and sheriff deputies contained a crude oil vinyl cyanide fire after two railroad tank cars exploded on an Akron Canton Youngstown freight train. Nine cars derailed while residents in a 3 600 population area were not evacuated, though some areas were blocked and a chemist team was en route from Goodyear Akron.

Governor Preston Smith of Texas orders state agencies to pay more than 100,000 teachers and state employees pay raises despite President Nixon's wage freeze. The White House condemns the action as a violation of state law and the Constitution. Nixon jokes that former governor Connally can handle it.
