With skimpy budgets and rising costs, area districts prepare for the 1977-78 school year. Norwalk and St Paul begin Aug 24 with staff and enrollment cuts noted, while St Marys and South Central set or plan start dates. Roof repairs and classroom renovations are funded by a $1 million five year issue.
The Reflector prints room assignments for public elementary students in Norwalk. Teachers are named as part of the notices. League and Benedict Schools appear on Page 2.
UPI reports Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, a longtime Democratic figure and former vice president, has terminal cancer with an operable pelvic tumor. Doctors say chemotherapy might allow a Senate return by September, despite the illness. Elvis Presley funeral details promise a final flower souvenir to mourners at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis. Separately, a Cleveland judge blocks Kent State gym construction until land-use litigation concludes, though a $6 million project may proceed meanwhile during an appeal.
The Marble Cone blaze in central California ran for 18 days burning 175000 acres and costing taxpayers 10.65 million dollars before being contained. The state still faced a northern timber fire with the Big Sur blaze under control and Hog Ridge burning rapidly near the Oregon border in Klamath National Forest.
Helen Rousis, a Cleveland supermarket clerk, won $85,000 in the Pot O Gold drawing and said the win feels like a dream while she plans to continue working. Winning numbers include Pat O Gold 407 and 834, 53246, 510, and 312181.
Ella D. McCadney resigns as director of the Huron County Home for Boys amid claims of political pressure from Juvenile Judge Thomas E. Heydinger over a prior criminal record. At the Junior Fair swine show about two dozen lightweight pigs were evaluated by a judge as youngsters guided and sometimes paddled their animals. Hurdles, canes and whips shaped the contest while spectators watched and the judge commented on each pig and its owner.
