Private plane crashes at Brunswick Airport kills pilot

In Medina County Ohio on takeoff a Piper Cherokee 260 crashed into a farm field beyond the Brunswick Airport runway. Pilot Walter Dodge about 50 Strongsville died trapped in the burning craft. Five skydivers aboard were injured while fleeing the flames and could not reach the wreckage.

Marines Kill 215 In Fierce Battle

Saigon reports a major Marine led assault near the DMZ. 215 Communist troops were killed in a six mile wide area near Gio Linh as U S Marines and South Vietnamese forces push toward the Ben Hai River. Additional clashes below the DMZ left 56 more North Vietnamese dead and 9 Marines wounded. An armada of bombers and gunships supported the operation.

Roosevelt Divorce Consideration Revealed in New Book

Historian Jonathan Daniels reports in Washington Quadrille that Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lucy Mercer Rutherford discussed divorce in 1917 while Eleanor Roosevelt kept silent. The book cites relatives to support the claim and notes Eleanor allegedly moved out of the White House within five days after learning of Mercer’s presence at Roosevelt’s deathbed.

Charter Commission Adopts Lawyer's Recommendations

Norwalk's charter commission approved all of lawyer David Rowlinson's nearly two dozen recommendations to fix vague wording. He will revise the charter and return it by Aug. 23 for distribution ahead of a 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26 meeting. The aim is to publish a version for Norwalk voters before the November election.

Ebert Named Firelands Basketball Coach First

Michael Ebert, former St. Pauls High School coach and Kent State graduate, is appointed first basketball coach for Firelands Campus of Bowling Green State University. He plans a part time role while teaching at Sandusky High School. Approximately 14 games are planned against branch campuses, with a Firelands athletics schedule forming.
