Dolly churns Atlantic seas with 75 mph winds

Hurricane Dolly moved through the Atlantic with peak winds of 75 miles per hour and gale winds extending 175 miles from its center. The storm posed no immediate threat to land.

Chilean Archbishop suspends nine priests over cathedral sit-in

In Santiago Archbishop Raul Salva Cardinal Henriquez suspended nine priests who led a 12 hour sit in at a municipal cathedral claiming a people's struggle for liberation. The group occupied the church with three nuns and 150 lay members protesting the church's wealth and power and the Pope's planned Aug. 22 1964 visit to Bogota Colombia.

Killer Cries To Be Caught In Broward Airport Slayings

Fight Near Saigon Sees Heavy Losses for Both Sides

U S and South Vietnamese forces report at least 146 Communist troops killed with possible total over 200 in three Mekong Delta clashes near Saigon. In the fiercest engagement 20 miles southwest of the capital, 69 Viet Cong were killed after 20 hours of fighting. American losses include 15 killed and 30 wounded.

Humphrey Wins Ohio Delegation Caucus Vote Amid Contested Ballot

UPI reports a four hour Ohio Democratic caucus gave Humphrey 58 percent of 115 votes among 128 delegates. McCarthy won 3 primary votes. 27 uncommitted and 25.5 absent. Key changes included Metzenbaum’s dismissal, Porter’s ouster as temporary chairman, and Young as delegation chair in a compromise.

Zoning Board Eyes Three-Unit Plan and Showroom Expansion

Norwalk Planning and Zoning will hear requests including James Seitz's plan for a three family dwelling on League and Hester with a setback change and a variance to allow a three family unit in an R2 zone. John Suhr seeks a setback to enlarge factory space and add a showroom at Summit Benedict. The panel will also review Herbert A. Fire damages truck and minor boiler of plumbing firm engine

Two Norwalk fire calls report $500 damage to the engine of a Lawrence & Battles Inc. truck after a gasoline leak ignited near Hester Street as Jim Babcock drove it out of the lot. A boy escaped injury when a match and gasoline caused a small fire on South Old State Road. City officials sign contracts for a northeast water pressure study and for Sewage disposal plant expansion to be signed within ten days, per Morley Price.

Rhodes and Rhodes Troupe to Attend Huron County Airport Dedication

Norman Cratbree of the State Division of Aviation predicts a successful program at the Huron County Norwalk Airport dedication on Sunday. Governor Rhodes will attend at 4 30 PM with a string of airplanes including antiques and a plane load of people. Jerri Mack and Bill Piper are among those invited to attend.

School Levies Up For Renewal

Norwalk City Board of Education weighs renewing expiring levies totaling 9.3 mills about 38 percent of levy income. Board to decide if voters will renew in November. Five resignations including Elmer Smith, Norwalk Teachers Association president, to be considered. Also discuss algebra for eighth graders and new high school textbooks.
