Death linked to The Conqueror filming in Utah desert

British papers on Sunday linked the deaths of John Wayne Susan Hayward Agnes Moorhead and director Dick Powell to radiation exposure from Nevada atomic tests during the 1954 film The Conqueror shot in St George Utah. The stars reportedly developed cancer months after filming and died years later.

Judge denies plea to move Sara trial in Norwalk case

In Norwalk, Judge Robert W. Smith denied Robert Dean Sura's change of venue request and blocked a reporter's notes as evidence. The defense sought a closed pre-trial hearing amid publicity surrounding the Dec. 15 Western Reserve High School break-in and fire, with two-day hearings and disclosures of local coverage and radio references.

Hijacked Iberia jet lands in Geneva faces arrest

A Spanish DC9 hijacked by three Spanish Foreign Legion deserters diverted to Geneva where authorities said the hijackers would be arrested immediately. Originally reported hostages ranged up to 24 but later 12 were reported, with only the pilot and copilot released before takeoff from Lisbon. Meanwhile in the United States, hospital births rose 5.7 percent in the first four months of 1979, with April up 7.6 percent year over year per AHA figures. In Cleveland promoter Jules Belkin shifted the World Series of Rock to two nights at the Coliseum after violence marred the prior concert, and in Cambridge arson investigators probe a Holiday Inn fire that killed 10, with no new developments reported.

Oil firms accused of cheating on oil imports

The Knight Ridder News Service says Americans may be losing about 2 million dollars daily as domestic oil is misrepresented as higher priced foreign oil. The discrepancy, totaling 222000 barrels per day, could yield up to 9.62 dollars per barrel in illicit profits, with domestic oil selling around 5.68 and imported oil at 14 to 15.30 dollars.

Sandusky Woman Dies After Area Crash at Major Intersection

A Sandusky woman, Della May Hamm, 59, died on arrival after a two car crash at U.S. 20 and Ohio 601 east of Norwalk. Her husband Loyd Hamm, 57, was in critical condition. Edith Papai, 39, of Wakeman, and her 17 year old passenger Lorenzo Cancel were treated and released. The crash occurred when Hamm failed to stop at a stop sign, sending their Ford Granada into Papai’s Ford LTD and snapping a utility pole. The case is pending coroner ruling on cause of death and funeral plans are announced for Coeburn Virginia.

A lightning struck Gulf Oil refinery storage tank in Toledo Ohio containing 800000 gallons of gasoline was being allowed to burn out with officials stating controlled burning. The fire stood about 40 feet high after eight hours and no evacuations were ordered as nearby homes are about a half mile away.
