A twin engine private plane en route to an emergency landing in Ellis County Kansas crashed short of the Hays strip, killing seven members of an Ohio family including pilot Thomas Murfin and his wife and their four children plus a visiting nephew. FAA and local authorities investigated as witnesses reported flames and a smoke plume.
A man accused of setting the December fire at Western Reserve School seeks to move his trial from Huron County. A Friday hearing on venue change continued into the afternoon, with prosecutor Richard Hauser stating WLKR manager Jim Westerhold appeared and publisher Jack Brown was subpoenaed. Prosecutors seek tapes and clippings about the fire and prior hearings. Bernard Myers and Sara were arrested. Myers pleaded guilty January 28 to aiding and abetting the break in and received six months to five years, released on shock probation after two months.
The White House says defense spending should not be traded for SALT II votes though Carter may back higher military spending. Powell noted debates over levels and priorities, praising NATO modernization and stressing overall security. Polish-American leaders at a meeting lauded Carter but urged more Polish-Americans in White House postings.
Norwalk organizes the Americanism Foundation led by Thomas J. Tattan of Norwalk High School as president. The group plans a seminar for Oct 17 by Freedom's Foundation staff and aims to foster core Americanism principles across schools, fund youth programs, essays and speeches, and invite community experts for classroom use.
Senator John Glenn of Ohio says the proposed unemployment aid measure would bring $8 million to Ohio cities in the next fiscal year if enacted. The Senate passed it 59 to 28. House action uncertain but momentum grows as unemployment rises and the Carter administration backs the bill.
A Baltimore contractor, William R. Lashley, 45, is accused in an IRS affidavit of head striking with a telephone receiver and sitting on agent Thomas Kovell during questioning about his taxes. Kovell was treated with eight stitches and Lashley posted $2,500 bail.
