Ammunition Depot Explodes Near Da Nang in Vietnam

Millions of rounds of mortar shells rockets and bullets exploded at the Phu Bai ammunition depot north of Da Nang after a grass fire. No American casualties were reported. Col. Stanley Low said everyone likely escaped. Officials attributed the blasts to a grass fire with no signs of enemy attack or sabotage.

Viet Cong Mopped Up In Delta Sweep Largest War Operation

In the Mekong Delta around My Tho, a two week allied operation killed 754 Viet Cong and captured 1 520 sympathizers. More than 15 000 American and South Vietnamese troops participated. U S casualties were eight killed and 33 wounded. A Skyhawk was shot down over North Vietnam during 145 Friday missions.

A hot race for the Western Reserve School Board is developing as Gerald Beck of Collins becomes the sixth petitioner. If Beck and George Van Dootingh both file, six candidates compete for three board seats. Beck has not run before. Other filings include DeLaurice B. Cooke for township clerk of New London, Francis E. Nestor for Clarksfield trustee, Dale Olsen for Norwalk school board, C Atlee Myers for Greenwich Board of Public Affairs, and Robert L. Funk with Carl H. Otterbacker for four-year terms.

Disturbances in Two Cities Suppressed Quickly

Two nights of unrest in Elgin Illinois and Wichita Kansas ended by dawn as curfews kept order. In Wichita a crowd of about 300 hurled rocks and fire bombs injuring an officer and damaging two stores while police arrested several. In Elgin about 100 demonstrators were dispersed after a rash of downtown arson and property damage with multiple arrests.

Paul Brown Native of Norwalk Inducted to Pro Football Hall of Fame

Football figure Paul Brown born September 7 1908 in Norwalk Ohio to Lester and Ida Brown. He led the Cleveland Browns to four All American Conference titles six straight eastern division crowns and three NFL championships before coaching until 1962 and later living in La Jolla California.

Norwalk Sesquicentennial finances show improvement

Norwalk's sesquicentennial committee reports a strengthened budget with $9,000 planned and about $5,000 on hand. Income from Harlem Globetrotters appearance and The Unsinkable Molly Brown adds $1,600 with $400 expected from souvenir plates. Major expense is $2,500 for the parade and $1,200 for office costs as a permanent office opens.

Norwalk will establish a hall of fame to honor residents with outstanding contributions. The Sesquicentennial Committee developed the idea, with first award announcements during the Sept 28 to Oct 1 celebration weekend.
