Thurman Munson dies in Akron air crash at 32

Akron Ohio UPI Thurman Munson star catcher for the New York Yankees died when his twin engine Cessna Citation crashed 1000 feet from the runway at Akron Canton airport. He was recovering from a long career with seven All-Star selections and MVP honors. Co-pilot David Hall and friend Jerry Anderson survived in fair condition with burns.

Wallace repents on segregation in Birmingham speech

Former Alabama Governor George C. Wallace, once a national symbol of resistance to integration, told history students at the University of Alabama Birmingham that segregation was wrong. He admitted his past stance and opposed returns to segregation.

Jobless rate ticks up to 5.7 as July figures released

UPI reports that the July unemployment rate rose to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent, with total employment up 450,000 to 97.2 million and about 5.8 million unemployed. Teenagers stayed at 15.3 percent, while minority teen rates eased to 30.9 percent. Civilian labor force grew to 103.1 million, driven by new entrants among youths. White House economists see risks of higher unemployment, with some predicting 8.2 percent by year end 1980.

Suspect held in slaying near Plymouth

A 43 year old North Robinson man faces an aggravated murder charge in the slaying of Charles J. Adams 19 of Plymouth. Donald Lacey was charged by Huron County Prosecutor Richard Hauser and is to be arraigned in Huron County Common Pleas Court. Adams died after a 11 31 p m shooting at 412 East Main Street Plymouth. A gun was recovered and sent for analysis as investigators speak to more witnesses about the case.

Fire chief appointed in Willard after retirement

Willard City Manager Paul Cappelle named George Yacob acting fire chief Thursday. Yacob replaces his brother John Yacob, who retired Aug. 1. Yacob has 25 years with the Willard Fire Department, first as a volunteer then as a firefighter and rescue squad attendant. He and his wife Joyce Marilyn reside at 626 Woodbine, Willard, and are parents of two married daughters.
