Nevada Prison to gas execute first in two decades

Jesse Walter Bishop learns he will be the first person in almost 20 years to die in the Nevada State Prison gas chamber. He pleaded guilty to killing a Maryland man who intervened during a casino robbery in Nevada while on his honeymoon and said he wants to get it over with.

Carter Opposes Mandatory Draft Registration Action

WASHINGTON UPI President Carter resists renewed congressional moves to restore mandatory draft registration saying it is not needed now as the volunteer Army faces an uncertain future. Powell said Carter will monitor the situation but does not deem reinstitution necessary. Cleveland UPI A judge sentenced arsonist John A Mata 38 Eastlake to 8 to 40 years for an arson for hire scheme targeting buildings under non union labor. Mata admitted setting fires, with payments linked to Laborers Union Local 310 officials and others.

Escapee from Ohio prison arrested in Ogallala

Larry Fornash also known as Dave Maynard was captured in Ogallala after living there for months. He fled an Ohio prison while serving 20 years to life for murder and allegedly abducted an Ohio girl at knifepoint, with the girl turning him in.

Suburban Dayton girl drowns amid Ohio storm damage

Becky Spears a 12 year old from Wayne Township disappeared during a thunderstorm in Dayton. Her body was found in a drainage ditch several hours later. One companion escaped and two others were rescued as storms toppled trees and knocked out power. In Ohio Eastlake UPI Cruse Moss elected president and CEO of White Motor, with S. Typhoon Hope Batters Hong Kong Strikes Refugees At Sea

Typhoon Hope slammed into Hong Kong with 150 mph winds and caused massive damage across the colony. Marine police searched for 408 Vietnamese refugees feared lost at sea while Macao accepted only a five person family. At least three killed and 123 injured as docks, shacks, and infrastructure were ruined and ships collided in the harbor. Officials noted widespread power and communication outages.

Plymouth teen shot to death in East Main Street incident

Plymouth, Ohio, 19-year-old Charles J. Adams died at Mansfield General Hospital at 2 40 this morning from a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators say death by own action is ruled out and a suspect is being questioned as authorities, including the BCI and local police, pursue clues from the 11 30 p m shooting at 412 East Main Street. A gun has been recovered and autopsy is planned. This is the second fatal shooting in Huron County in 17 days.

U.S. trade deficit widens amid oil costs and demand for small cars

The Commerce Department reported a $7.64 billion balance of payments deficit for Q2, up $1.54 billion from Q1, the largest since last year’s third quarter. Oil imports rose 11 percent to $12.9 billion while foreign auto purchases increased by $600 million, with Canada seen cutting U.S. model imports.

Willard man indicted for theft in Norwalk artifacts case

A 20-year-old Willard man Gary Lee Lacey was indicted for the July 12 theft of artifacts from the Firelands Museum in Norwalk. The grand jury also indicted Doyle Hammons and Ronald Metcalf on related charges. Hammons faced breaking and entering and grand theft for $1,500 in stereo equipment from Lazy Rest Camp Ground Fairfield Township. Metcalf was charged with gross sexual imposition. Judge Smith set September 7 for Hammons pre-trial conference and Aug 9 for Metcalf case with bond $5,000.
